And hey! This compilation could just have well starred Dana or Patrick, Josh, Michael, Natalie, Angel, Alan, Patty, Jason or Heath! If only your names started with ‘B’ you would have got the part (bad audition joke, sorry). See you on set!
Winning an Austin Addy for this three spot campaign was especially gratifying. Commercials that encourage blood donations are typically heart-string pullers. They lean into the gravitas and are often really really sad:( Our clients at Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center think differently. They see how happy the hundreds of daily donors are all across Houston. We worked together (sans agency) to develop a strategy focusing on how positive people feel after donating blood. That led to a new tagline: Donating blood makes you feel good. Real good. And that led to these very funny, and now award winning, spots! Working with Theresa, Ramona and Josh @commitforlife makes us feel good. Real good!! Thank you and congrats to all of us!

If you missed last week’s life celebration, you can always watch the documentary - free and forever- in the link in bio. The movie is called Crazy Carl and his Man-Boobs: An Austin Love Story. And after watching it with an audience last Sunday we realized the second half of the title might be the most important part. Using Carl as a psychedelic prism we are really telling the story of Austin. And it’s a beautiful one.
And then there are the man-boobs… we posted the trailer after work because this trailer and the film are #nsfw!!

Donating blood makes you feel good. It made us feel good getting a real rock and roller to shred in this spot. @paparoach guitar slinger @twan_e Anthony Esperanto not only pulled out all the tricks on this one he composed it as well. No he does not normally play with a light up guitar, hmmm but now maybe he will. We #gwere happily wired on this one thanks to shooting at @doubletroublehtx we got so silly we put production on screen. Yo yo yo @jreeder99 !! Good clients = good times and that adds up to good work. (Not good at math)

On paper this spot has a great payoff but not easy to execute. Watch it, and you’ll see what we mean. Okay, after reading the boards we talked to @elasticpictures who save our asses in these “Holly won’t let us have a live bear on set” situations. What we did was watch too many bears on green screen stock footage clips until we found the right one. Then shot plates on set/farm and had Beefy in a bear suit as a stand-in to get the right performance. It was a delicate balance of art and technology. A real ‘fix it in pre’ situation. The wooden bear sculpture is real - we chain-sawed that up after wrap and grilled sausages on it. Tasted like sweet victory.

The first little spark of this idea came from a Neil deGrasse Tyson talk about how different we would have handled the Covid pandemic is we could simple see the virus. With the help of @richterry360 we fanned that flame into Covid=confetti and boosters=shield. To execute it we blended in-camera confetti with CGI confetti and invisible shield. This was a fun one to figure out, especially on a PSA budget. Keep your shields up everyone. What ya can’t see can still git ya.
