As many of you know, I’ve been putting together music showcases to support emerging/local bands. It’s something I’m passionate about, but I’m running into a few challenges that are making it harder to keep going.

Here’s the situation:

Sponsors are tough to secure unless the event is tied to a cause, and even then, it’s hit or miss.

Though I put in several hours of work for each event, I’m not getting paid for the work I put into these events. This is okay for now, but I’m also personally covering costs like advertising, renting equipment (backline), etc, which is not cheap. Additionally, the shows I put on have higher production costs (if we are running two stages and such), which means that venues take a bigger cut of the revenue.

All the money from ticket sales goes to the bands (and/or the cause if we have one), but when you have 8 or more bands splitting a few hundred dollars, it doesn't even cover the cost of gas for some of these bands, much less the bar tab (some venues will not give bands drink tickets when there are multiple bands). If I would take my costs out of the ticket sales, the bands would be left with almost nothing.

The Dilemma:

I really want to support emerging/local bands, but that means I have to keep the ticket prices low. So, the funds get spread thin.

Some bands don’t even bother to promote the shows, or they let all of their friends/family in for free.

I’ve thought about getting higher-profile bands or cover bands involved, but that feels like it goes against the whole point of this project. Plus, that increases my costs.

Another option could be requiring bands to sell a small number of tickets (like 5 at $10 each), but then everyone starts screaming "pay to play". However, my thought is if your band is playing a bigger show, bringing at least 5 people who are willing to pay to see you seems like a reasonable expectation. Many of the venues have draw expectations to book shows.

I would love to keep this going, but I am considering stopping after the SXSW shows because this is not sustainable for me.

I would love to hear your suggestions on how I can keep supporting emerging bands while covering costs and making sure bands walk away with something decent.
Do you know a business that would like to help sponsor these events (even small amounts like $100 would go a long way)? Do you have any other ideas? Thanks in advance!
