One of the most unlikely pairings for a Christmas duet ever — and I absolutely adore it!

In September of 1977, Bing Crosby was finalizing his CBS Christmas special, Bing Crosby's Merrie Olde Christmas, due to be aired that December. This was just after Heroes was released, and Bowie was invited to sing "Little Drummer Boy" (which he wasn't keen on), so — in a stroke of genius — the show's music supervisors wrote "Peace On Earth" as a counterpoint to "Little Drummer Boy" — and the rest is history.

As the scene together that precedes their duet suggests, they both came from very different walks of life, but despite their obvious differences, Bing and Bowie both genuinely enjoyed the experience and praised each other afterward. Only weeks later, Bing passed away at the age of 74 before his Christmas special was even aired.

"Little Drummer Boy/Peace On Earth" wasn't released a single until 1982, five years after it was recorded, and became Bowie's fastest-selling single in the UK until that point.

Come hear more stories like this from musicians, artists, filmmakers, and photographers who collaborated with Bowie at our incredible Bowie World Fan Convention in beautiful Liverpool, UK July 26-28, 2024! Ticket and sponsor info in comments.

Early days of Pop Culture Press and early days pre The Gourds. I loved the Picket Line Coyotes (still one of the best band names ever). There was a pretty vibrant scene in town and I'm so glad Pop Culture Press was around to chronicle it. Good times.

Our dear sweet friend and longtime music writer, editor, and consummate fan Kent Benjamin passed away on Friday. Kent was one of the first people I met when I moved to Austin, and I remember going to visit him at the Austin Music Network studios back in the day. He was from the Deep South delta of Mississippi and Tennessee, so of course, we bonded over that, as well as The Jam and Robyn Hitchcock, and so much more. Kent worked with me on Pop Culture Press, contributing so much deep musical knowledge and insight. His articles were lengthy and full of details, and those of you who knew him would shake your head yes in agreement! Here is an interview he did with the late great Jim Dickinson, who Kent loved and respected so much. We'll be adding more of Kent's articles to the Pop Culture Press site soon, so be on the lookout. Kent, we will miss you dearly, sweet man.
