🌻 A photo exhibit honoring the lives of the children lost at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas, is currently housed locally at Canopy Projects Gallery (916 Springdale).

✨️ The exhibit "77 Minutes in Their Shoes" by photographer Sarah Sudhoff features images of the children's families holding their shoes and one, a backpack.

🦋 Last Saturday (January 11), parents of the children gathered at Canopy Gallery for a day of panels with Texas Representatives, survivors of gun violence, artists, activists, and each other.

🌻 Together, the families of the children lost, formed Lives Robbed . Lives Robbed is an issue advocacy non-profit mission to honor each child's legacy advocating for gun reform at both state and federal levels.

✨️ Local Latino arts non-profit Mas Cultura led a mural project to honor the 21 lives robbed in Uvalde.

🦋 A 2022 story by Luz Moreno-Lozano in the Austin American Statesman features each mural, photographed by Aaron E. Martinez. You can read this, along with more information about the exhibit, at a link in our Instagram stories, which will be saved in the archive up top too.

✨️ Our recap of the January 5th show features Los Kemet and G-smith .

Los Kemet is Mississippi born, and describes his sound as “Southern Gangsta Musik”. We hear his title track of the same name, along with some of his viral hits. He has lived in Austin for the past five years, and here he met Austin Hip-Hop staples J Soulja and promoter Jamal McKinney of the ever growing . Los describes their working relationship, and how he has honed his craft locally.

Kemet has grown his TikTok platform to major success and shares tips — including posting consistently and catering to listener wants of cross-promotion on Instagram.

✨️At the start of the year, rapper G-smith released his new project, “A intergalactic ride through space : The John Doe chronicles”, and we hear this music throughout the episode. Smith is also a chef and a caterer. He has partnered with community staples College of Hip-Hop Knowledge to bring a wide menu range at their shows, like soups, sandwiches, salads, and sustainable entrées. He is open to catering weddings, quinceañeras and like events!

🎉 Hope you’re having a wonderful start to the new year! To round out 2024’s programming we are joined by DJ Ella Ella and Doug Leveton , the Signature Events Coordinator of Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM).

HAAM is an organization that helps provide an access point to full body, health, and wellness care for working local musicians and music teachers. It is currently unique to Austin, being the first of its kind in Texas.

📍Doug shares to qualify, potential members need to reside in Travis County, or the surrounding Williamson, Burnett, Blanco, Hays, and Bastrop Counties.

Ella Ella is a HAAM member, along with the majority of her friends. She began DJing around 2016, transitioning from non-profit event production, and has played some of the largest spaces like and

Like Ella Ella, Doug is a DJ preforming under the moniker Dug Fresh. He is also a drummer for the staple band Canned Beats . Before working for HAAM, he was a member and received services like dental, vision, and custom ear plugs.

The SIMS Foundation is also local, and helps provide mental health services to Austin's music industry. HAAM helps you get connected to SIMS, which Doug shares helped him navigate the pandemic.

In an interview highlight, both Ella Ella and Doug discuss the dynamics of gender and race as working DJs in Austin, and how their indenties have shaped their lived experience.

🇫🇷 Our December 22nd episode features transcontental rap group, MDK & Da French Touch, in their first interview together.

In 2016, longstanding Austin native rap quartet Mindz of a Different Kind (MDK) , released their album “Foursight”, to major local success. The year proved pivotal, meeting French Hip-Hop artists Cerbère Baobabtwo and beatboxer Mic Breathe , during SXSW.

Their friendship has resulted in tours across Europe, helping Mindz of a Different Kind return to their roots as youth educators, visiting schools and showcasing overseas.

🎙In our interview, we hear the orgins of MDK, beginning in 2007 as members of a nonprofit youth enrichment program, the Cipher ATX.

At 14, Te’aunna “Blakchyl” Moore was the youngest in the program, which ran for six years. She is the designated leader of MDK, and the first to achieve noterity as a solo artist, and budding filmmaker.

All members have followed suit with Darrion “Chi-Clopz” Borders releasing his first solo endeavor, “Despite Our Differences” (produced by ), this November. We hear “Holdin’ On” and a collaboration with Servant Saivonne , “Team Player”, from the project. The video is directed by community staple , who is teaming up with Breez “BZA” Smith to produce his solo music.

📼 Another staple, Ben Buck joins us. He and MDK member, Nick Cruz , released the album, “Low Brow Purists”, with .equality , as a pandemic outlet. He runs a local business manufacturing casset tapes, and helped the group release their self-titled project that we hear throughout the episode.

🌟 As one of Buck’s earlier artist influences, the friends discuss healthy competition, a comittment to their music, and eachother.

🎵 Buck and Mic Breathe give an in-studio beatboxing set, and we close with Blakchyl’s solo track, “Come Up,” off of the 2023 EP, “Call Me Sometimes.”

✨️ Our December 15th episode centers around local Hip-Hop history, legacies, and family.

✨️ Juana Esperanza , member of the foundational Austin Hip-Hop Group the Cooly Girls is joined by her son LaDarrian “NorthSide Bully (N$B)” Torry . They share the interview with some of Winner Circle , a collective of longtime solo rappers.

🎵 We begin the episode with “Lights Camera Action”, by Winner Circle and “Here It Is”, an early track by the Cooly Girls.

🎵 Preforming since adolescence, Esperanza took a 20 year hiatus. She will release her first solo album “Jackie”, on her birthday next year, January 8th. We hear a song off this project, entitled “Flights”, produced by Reggie Coby .

🎤 N$B asks his mother what touring was like in her teen years. Along with the Cooly Girls, Esperanza toured amongst the likes of The Geto Boys and DMX. As they’re talking, an Instrumental of MzDank’s “Undeniable” plays. MzDank , Erika Sodie, is Esperanza’s group mate from the Cooly Girls.

🎵 N$B’s new album is set to drop on January 25th, and we hear an earlier track, “CNTRL THE ROOM”.

✨️ Octavis “Esbe da 6th Street Bully” Berry is Esperanza’s brother. He passed in 2011. Along with Coby, Esbe was a member of the rap duo Dread Skott, and the prolific group “The Leauge of Extraordinary G’z” .

✨️ “This group is what he left me,” N$B says of his uncle, in a 2012 cover story from the Austin Chronicle. “He created the League of Extraordinary G’z and in passing away, he gave me the League.”

🎵 We near the end of the episode hearing “Don’t Play”, by members of Winner Circle, and close with The Leauge’s, “We Gon Make It”.

🕊 Rooted in the Southeast Austin neighborhood of Dove Springs, LoveHub ATX is an enrichment program for Dove Springs students and families, based in Mendez Middle School.

Lauren Bruno , the director of $3 Shows is our co-host for this episode. She introduces Ofelia Zapata, the founder of LoveHub ATX. Zapata is a longtime community organizer and advocate for Dove Springs. 

🕊 Abe Hernandez, DJ Abe the Ambassador , will be performing at $3 Shows. Like Zapata, Hernandez is also an organizer and advocate for Dove Springs. ✨️ For our December 1st episode, we kick off a new month with founder of the non-profit record label Superwoman Records Cat Carter and recording artist, Jennun .u.n.

📝 Carter is a recipient of The City of Austin’s Elevate Grant as an individual artist, and Superwoman Records received the Thrive Grant. She gives tips on how to succeed with grant writing. The city holds informational sessions through the Economic Development Department, where you sign up for free through Eventbrite.

Carter is an advocate for AI, and uses ChatGBT as a resource. She tailors her AI towards the mission statement of Superwoman Records, which is to empower and elevate Black women artists in the Austin music industry.

🎤 The first cohort of Superwoman Records features and . Voting will be live in January to vote for the second. Superwoman Records is a recipient of another grant as part of the city’s Future 35 project. We play Gio’s tracks, “Thirty Five (35)” and “Can’t Nobody”.

We also hear “never have I ever” by Keearah. She is a student in Nashville, and a member of the Grammy U program.

As an ambassador for this program, Jennun shares the process to apply. Applications are open to students and non-students ages 18 through 29. Jennun brings her Public Relations intern, Monica Sanchez , a UT student who is also a part of Grammy U.

🎉Jennun will be performing at Flamingo Cantina on December 10, as part the PRE-ROLL open mic and concert series. This is a competition where one male, and one female artist will be selected to preform at their SXSW stage, as an official artist.

⚾️ Fresh off of their new full-length album, “Major League”, Geto Gala joins us in studio for our November 24th episode.

✨️ Both successful solo artists, Deezie Brown and Jake Lloyd joined with longtime collaborator Danny Saldivar II , to release their self-titled 2021 EP (Extended Play). Saldivar serves as a both producer on “Major Leauge”, and plays keys for the band.

✨️ The group has enjoyed critical acclaim, and an extensive press run, being named November Artist of the Month.

⚾️ In our interview, they discuss friendship, balancing off of eachothers strengths, and making room for other creative endeavors.

🎵 We hear tracks from the new album, and their EP, as well as collaborations with Austin staple artists Kydd Jones , Blakchyl , and Sweet Limb .

✨️ Deezie tells the orgin story of Geto Gala, and remembers meeting Jake at local venue Hotel Vegas , where they just finished a month long residency.

💫 As a singer, dancer, and choreographer, our featured November 17th artist, Quentin Arispe has taken the local music scene by storm.

🎤 Arispe preforms as Neptune, the lead singer of The Past Lives . Coming from the success of their debut album “Purple Dreams”, she released a solo LP — “As Above, So Below”, with a live version of the album filmed at .

✨️ Arispe talks the scope of gender expression, identity, queerness, and how music helps him cope through the stages of grief, loss, and vulnerability.

📣 ”You can deny me all you want. You can kill us. You can do whatever you want. But at the end of the day, duality and androgyny and feminine energy is what makes the world go ’round.” — Arispe tells from their September cover story with The Austin Chronicle.

✨️ Arispe highlights stories with close friends in community, and how essential the connections are to bounce off eachother’s accomplishments.

Formed in 2015, CHHK is a label and conglomerate --- having produced a variety of shows, events, residencies, and the self-funded 2017 "Rhyme Time Fest".

🎵 We hear tracks by each CHHK rap artist featured in studio. Casino ATX of and multiple other local supergroups, breaks down the difference between a supergroup and a crew.

The group emphasizes balance, community support, space, and trust as the elements that help supergroups work.

💫 Our October 27th episode was action packed!

🎙Longtime friends and community pillars Zell Miller and Jeffrey “Da’Shade Moonbeam” Johnson share about The Hip-Hop Theater Explosion, a production at Hyde Park Theater they are collaborating on which mixes spoken word, poetry, rap, and different styles of dance.

📼 Ryan Blake , archivist with the Austin History Center, talks about the work he has been doing to preserve local Hip-Hop culture. He is a former co-host of this show, and comes back to interview.

📰 Millan Verma is a writer, journalist & editor who helps run , a forward thinking music & culture publication founded in 2021 that’s self-described as “a hub of the wider internet underground, looking forwards and backwards at the records that shake our bodies.” He talks about his start interviewing artists in the Atlanta underground & ongoing journey as a (paid) journalist in 2024.

🔋 has quickly grown into a pipeline for the next generation of music writers & creatives. Editors & have published features with & while founder Mano Sundaresan was hired in July 2024 as ‘s Head of Editorial Content.
