Happy Birthday Alex Hannaford, (and congratulations on your book release) -- and also condolences to Austin Texas. It was so hard to leave Austin -- especially in defeat, realizing that my career was a near impossibility in the town that gave my dreams birth. Every visit back has been bittersweet, and ultimately I learned that nothing lasts forever and life's most valuable things are people, memories, artistic expression, and love. Austin is the home to many of my favorites of each, but I'm so in love with my new hometown and creating new ones...

For me, one of the most painful things about living in Austin Texas in the 21st Century was the ever-increasing loss of things that made it so special. Seeing landmarks, panoramas, cultural gathering places, attitudes, and local businesses vanish alarmed and saddened me. I created Save Austin Music & Austin Variety Show to preserve the artistic way of life which nurtured me as a creative, but after 10 years of failing dedicated action, I watched things get worse. So I left (out of self-preservation) and I honor those who remain and struggle to achieve "the Austin Dream" of a sustainable creative lifestyle in the "Live Music Capital of the World".

Now the global nightmare of the COVID Pandemic has ripped the rug out from under the fragile Austin music scene, and the promise has never looked so bleak. But hope springs eternal, and friends like Nakia Reynoso and his passion, Austin Texas Musicians have assumed the commitment to save one of Austin's most important cultural and fiscal contributors, it's music scene.

Tomorrow, Monday Sept. 28 at 11am, a group comprehensively representing Austin's Music Industry will hold a rally at Austin City Hall, and they'll be asking the City to put it's money where its mouth is - yet again. They could really use your help; this is an "all hands on deck" effort. Far from a handout, this is yet another - and possibly the most important ever - plea to Austin's city government to partner with the local Music Industry in real terms. The City government and economy has benefitted for decades without contributing much in return to "The Golden Goose" which has made Austin the boomtown it continues to be.

If I was there, I'd be proudly joining Monday's rally to impel the City Council to take concrete action to preserve Austin's touchstone of culture and small business. It's been over 10 years since I did it last, and it's long overdue. Please give the rally your support by joining in, donating, or just sending your positive thoughts in their direction.

The future of Austin Music is literally at stake. It still needs saving. Godspeed & God Bless you all tomorrow.

11 years ago today, I was joined by a dedicated bunch of hard working friends, artists, and fans to create a lifelong dream: the first episode of my own television show about everything I loved and felt was important: Austin music, Austin comedy, Austin burlesque, Austin businesses, and people who loved great entertainment. In 7 or so years, we shot 25 episodes, were on broadcast tv in Austin for years, did countless events, came together, fell apart, and documented some great talent from Austin and elsewhere in the world.
I have deep gratitude to everyone who made Austin Variety Show happen over those 7 crazy years. Thanks for putting up with me, supporting my vision, and thank you for helping realize my dream. If I still owe you money, I'm in Hollywood earning it as we speak. I can't wait to call you asking for your PayPal info - it won't be long...
Here's the last episode we completed. Maybe one day we'll all get to see the last 10 episodes we never finished.
