From Shepard Fairy creator of the Obama 2008 Hope image. 💪🏾

“We are not going back.” These words from Kamala Harris summarize the moment we are in, and in order not to go back, we must go FORWARD! While we have not achieved all the goals we might be seeking, we are making progress - all in the face of expanding threats and regressive political adversaries.

But we are not going back. In fact, we have a very real opportunity to move forward. If we act we can move forward our desire for a healthy planet, for corporate accountability, toward equality and away from racism, sexism, xenophobia, and homophobia, for equitable access to opportunity, for full access to the medical care we want or need, for fair and just immigration policies.

I believe VP Kamala Harris and her VP pick Tim Walz are our best chance to move forward. They are our best chance to push back on encroaching fascism and threats to democracy, and our best chance for creating the world we all desire and deserve. Politics is messy... but messy is no excuse for checking out. Messy is the work and the work can be joyful. Messy is what it takes to get through the daunting mess in pursuit of a better future. But we only win if we show up. Be ready for Nov. 5. Check your voter registration status now.

This art is a tool of grassroots activism for all to use non-commercially. I was not paid for it and will not receive any financial benefit from it. I created this work purely in pursuit of a better future. Let’s get there together!

What’s the number 1 thing people fear more than anything else?

It’s not spiders, heights, or even public speaking.
It’s the gut-wrenching fear that we don’t matter.

All the fame, money, and achievements? They don’t make a difference.

We feel invisible, misunderstood, and trapped in the deepest, darkest corners of our lives. We strive to make our mark, but sometimes it feels like it doesn’t mean anything.

Many people feel like they have no culture, no family, no community to call their own.

To find deeper connections and combat these feelings of disconnection and isolation, use the Djembe | Inspiring Inclusive Connections card deck. Whether you’re with a stranger, coworker, friend, teammate, or family member, these cards can help you create meaningful bonds and remind you that you are seen, heard, and valued.

Civil Rights Attorney Ben Crump, Rev. Al Sharpton, the Leadership Network, and the family of Sonya Massey, the woman who was killed by a police officer responding to her 911 call, will hold a “Remembering Sonya Massey” rally today at New Mount Pilgrim Church in Chicago at 6pm.

There will also be a press conference at 4:15pm that will address a recent police union grievance filed on behalf of the former officer, Sean Grayson, who killed Sonya. The grievance calls for Grayson to be reinstated to the police department and be reimbursed for any lost wages.

The press conference can be watched live on Attorney Crump’s Instagram page .

Sangamon County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Grayson shot Sonya Massey in the face, killing her, on July 6, 2024. Massey, a 36-year-old unarmed woman, had called the police to report a suspected intruder in her home. Grayson has been indicted and charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and official misconduct. He is currently being held in custody without bail.

KXAN’s has been promoted to Evening Anchor!

Starting her career as a writer, web producer and multi-media journalist in North Texas, she then worked for over eight years in Syracuse, New York. During that time, Sanders developed a documentary titled “Hidden History: The End of Syracuse’s 15th Ward”, which earned an Edward R. Murrow Award and a Syracuse Press Club Award. It was nominated for an Emmy.

Since being at KXAN, Sanders has been awarded the Lone Star Emmy for her reporting on the change in policies that led to the gentrification and redlining of the Black and Brown Austin communities.

Anchor Jennifer Sanders is well deserving of this promotion, and we congratulate her on yet another milestone in her career!

After two years of being in business, Diner Bar and The Grey Market by James Beard award winning chef Mashama Bailey and her partner John O. Morisano, will be closing their doors next Monday, July 15, with their final day of service being the previous day, Sunday, July 14.

This news comes as a surprise but was also foreshadowed in 2023 with the closing of the seemingly thriving Wax Myrtle’s (also located inside the Thompson Hotel) because the hotel decided to internalize its restaurants.

For more info on this, go to soulciti.com or our Linkin.bio. To show support for the two restaurants during their five remaining nights of service, patrons can make a reservation for Diner Bar or just drop by The Grey Market. Both establishments will be sorely missed by the Austin foodie community.

As an ever evolving reflection of the culture, the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., continuously develops exhibitions to broadcast the interests and concerns that speak to the present.

Located in the Rhimes Family Foundation Visual Arts Gallery, visitors are led down a path that begins with a photographic and artistic representation of the reckoning that has occurred through protests and demonstrations in the pursuit of equal justice. Each piece unveils a range of emotions from sadness to understanding, and I found these feelings were clearly represented in the artwork entitled “Trapped” by the artist Alvin Carl Hollingsworth.

This mixed media piece showcases how redlining was a detrimental government tactic that hindered African Americans from being able to obtain mortgages, insurance coverage, and ultimately blocking the dream of homeownership based solely on race.
