I am a mixed-media artist living in Aurora, Colorado. When I began my art career over 25 years ago, I worked in a realistic style in watercolor and oils. Eventually, my work evolved into a more abstract style and led to my work with textures, collages, and fluid acrylic paints. I am a certified Art Educator with Golden Paints. I have taught thousands of artists in workshops around the United States for over 20 years. Here is another attempt at using oil and cold wax medium. I am finding it is not that easy to master. There are wonderful effects, however, that are not achievable in other mediums.

“RAINBOW CANYON 5”

This geologic abstract is full of vibrant color. It can be hung as a vertical presentation, as shown, or a horizontal presentation. This is my 5th painting in this theme, based on the colorful rock formations, both real and imagined, of the Southwest.

I have done a number of geologic abstract paintings featuring colorful rock formations. Complexity of the colors is achieved by layering one color on top of another. This can only be done with transparent acrylics, resulting in a shimmering look somewhat similar to pastel.

This artwork, titled "Badlands," is a mixed media piece that showcases a rich texture and three-dimensional feel. The colors transition through earthy tones of brown, orange, gold, and charcoal, with a striking stripe of bright blue cutting across the darker shades.

"Rocky Ridge" by Colorado Artist Carol Nelson
This unique mixed media painting is striking in its dramatic format - a LONG, NARROW painting. As such, it fits in a lot of places in the home that are too narrow for most works. It is painted on a piece of MDF trim board, and backed with an oak board. The smaller oak board gives stability and also makes the painting stand out from the wall about 0.5”. There is a lot of texture in this piece. The “rocks” are made from plaster of Paris and hand painted to go with the composition.

“Graffiti Relics”

The canyon walls in some areas of the Southwest US have visible petroglyphs scratched into the stones by ancient Indian residents of the area.

This painting shows my version of some of these petroglyphs.
