The History of WHZE-FM
WHZE 87.5 FM started out as HAZE.FM broadcasting on 87.5 FM with 7 watts and transmitted for 5 months from an antenna mounted on the side of a residents’ home on Bennett Pl. in Cambridge Chase, Aurora. Their slogan was “THE HARDEST RAP ON THE DIAL” and they played hardcore trap rap on 87.5 FM. HAZE.FM first went on the air on 87.5 FM on February 18, 2017 with DJ Slick Swisha, with his radio show “Swade Libra Productions” and Nina B. With her show, “Hood B*tch Radio.” DJ Slick Swisha was 20 years old at the time and Nina B. was 16 years old when they first went on the air on February 18, 2017. Since December 2017, DJ Slick Swisha has been doing technical work for WHZE, and he has 2 years broadcasting experience from College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. When HAZE.FM went on the air on 87.5 FM they played rap from artists like Zoey Dollaz, Meek Mill, Rick Ross, Rich the Kid, Migos, YFN Lucci etc. with no commercials and “street wise” talk between songs. HAZE.FM had a 12dB 50Hz bass boost on their carrier signal to drive subwoofers, and they broadcasted in mono to compensate for the extra modulaton. HAZE.FM had a radio signal that reached about 1.5 miles fringe range. WHZE 87.5 FM currently broadcasts from a transmitting antenna located atop a 60 ft. ComEd transmission line tower on the Aurora/Naperville border just east of Metea Valley High School with an ERP of 15 watts with a directional radio signal that reaches about 5 miles fringe range. WHZE primarily serves the neighborhood of Cambridge Chase with excellent reception, as well as Concord Valley, Stonebridge, Atwater, Bristol Station, Ashton Pointe, and Autumn Run with good to fair reception, but Raw 87 WHZE can be heard as far away as Warrenville and Batavia with a good radio, reching 50,000 residents. WHZE plays a variety of rap, rhythmic and R&B from artists like Future, Dave East, Cam’ron, Kehlani, Sevyn Streeter, Chris Brown and Dreezy while playing unsigned artists too. WHZE has no official website but has a live 128kbps AAC audio stream. WHZE uses FM synthesis technology that provides a wide stereo field, (although WHZE has a mono signal) and a rich deep 30 Hz bass boost to transmitted programming, without a pilot tone (due to a mono signal) to eliminate stereo noise. WHZE strives to bring the listener the hottest urban tracks from a wide variety of artists, and WHZE is always looking for new talent. Listeners who can rap are encouraged to send their demo, recorded in the highest quality possible, to [email protected]. As of September 12, 2018 the contract between Verizon Wireless expired and WHZE is now owned by Raw Truth Broadcasting LLC. WHZE 87.5 has competition in the Chicago radio market from “Urban Contemporary” format stations Power 92.3 WPWX, foremost, followed by 107.5 WGCI and 104.3 WBMX, although WHZE has a “Hip-Hop” format because WHZE does not play directly from the billboard Hot 100 chart. WHZE used to operate at 99.1 MHz but on December 1, 2018, Educational Media Foundation (EMF) branding as “K-Love” bought its 6th radio frequency in the Chicago area forcing WHZE to change frequency back to 87.5 MHz. On September 2, 2019 WHZE inked an 12 month deal with Ibiquity and acquired HD radio technology to broadcast a secondary digital channel on WHZE’s 87.5 carrier frequency but negotiations persisted another 3 weeks due to a request to transmit at a higher than the allowed 10% digital to analog power limit to ensure the digital signal coverage on 87.5 MHz is identical to the analog coverage. WHZE broadcasts a powerful 4.2 watt HD signal that can be received up to 6 miles away with an HD radio with a half wave dipole antenna. On October 8, 2019 Raw 87 launched Ultraviolet, an over-the-air digital EDM channel that boasts a unique experience with a European feel playing Progressive House, Ambient, Goa-Psy trance and deep tracks from electronic artists. Ultraviolet broadcasts 96 kbps AAC+ audio with 3 layer FEC (Forward Error Correction).
