Lone Tree Veterinary Medical Center

Hey if you’re planning on taking your dog along on a hike in the mountains this summer, remember that what may be easy for you may not be so easy for your dog.
This is Scott Whatley for my Friends and my Vet, Lone Tree Veterinary Medical Center, with a message about preventing altitude sickness in our dogs.
Just as in people, our dogs can experience the effects of altitude, and some can be serious if the dog is not properly acclimated, especially at altitudes above 8,000 ft.
Since not all dogs respond to altitude in the same way, here are a few general guidelines to help your dog have a better hike with you.
Number 1: Don’t make a trek up a fourteener the first hike you take with your dog! Start with short hikes in the foothills below 8,000 ft. and work up to higher altitudes and longer hikes over the course of several weeks. Be sure to keep your dog on a lead no longer than 6 feet and avoid letting your dog wander off the trail.
Number 2: Always pay close attention to how your dog is doing. Slowing down and panting are signs your dog needs to stop and rest, drink water, or head back to the trailhead and be done for the day. Allow rest days in between hikes to help prevent overuse injuries to your dog’s muscles, joints, and paw pads.
Number 3: Take plenty of water for your dog, more than you think you’ll need, along with food and treats. It’s also wise to pack a dog emergency medical kit and a dog transport sling – just in case your dog is injured or unable to walk back down on its own.
