Today, we commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally received the news of their freedom—two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

In honor of this day, we reflect on our history through the reading of a poem titled Ancestors written by Terrance Watson.
