“I think a lot about curating community, and I think a lot about the impossible-to-curate moments of unity that appear within curated spaces.”

“Within each space that I participate, I find familiar faces, I find new faces, and I find myself.”

“Turning to a new year rife with hard questions and grand fears, a brief note:
Community will always exist around you. Community will always exist within you. Anything I can do, you can do better. I write these entries as a guide in case you need it, but I trust you. I believe in you. And I believe that we will all find, in this darkest moment, the fire within us necessary to keep each other warm.”

"When art acts as a commodity, it does not need us. It’s borne of capitalism and thrives on competition and hoarding and the soothing, numbing hypnosis of spectacle. To survive here, we need it.... When art acts as a community’s voice, it does need us: it becomes us."

"[I]f our art is always self-portraiture—and I believe that it is—then we should feel allowed to give it some love! Why does the internal judge always get to have all the fun? It’s time we humor ourselves a little bit! We can feel special and we can feel that our art is special. This life is a hard one. For many of us, it is an all-consuming passion. It is okay to pause every once in a while, ground ourselves, breathe, and reflect on the beauty we create."

As our arts-based programming evolves, so should its name and logo!
🌟Introducing the SOAC Artist-Activist Meetups!🌟

2024 has been an INCREDIBLE year for our meetups.
• In January, you helped us to create the blog as a sibling project to our in-person meetups, expanding access exponentially!
• By springtime, you were eager to use our gatherings to develop a celebratory event in the city, showcasing the incredible talent and curiosity of our city's artists. From there we picked up momentum all the way to our July Celebration of Expression event at . And what a success that was!!!
• After the celebration, we needed to turn inward, to decide together how these meetups would develop. In October, we held our first Interdisciplinary Art Critique, and now we've decided we'll finish out 2024 with two more! Friday, November 15th and Saturday, December 14th. Mark the dates!

📣Here's the pitch: Holistic, safe critique space is the foundation of a healthy art community—indeed, it is crucial to the civic ecosystem as a whole that artist-activists, the vox populi, are given the space and unity to allow their critical thought to flourish.📣

We hope you'll find some time to check out our updated/updating meetups! And even if you can't make them, we hope you'll at the very least reach out and say hi or share your ideas for improved gatherings! Feel free to DM us here or email Jacob at [email protected] any time!

Deeper information about the history of the meetups and RSVP links for upcoming meetings can be found on our website (in the Artist Meetups tab) and through the QR code! See you soon—and thanks for everything.

We think you're going to LOVE our new resource!
▶️
Across our current 9 blog entries, we cite 31 different resources. We know that will only grow exponentially as the meetups continue. This Annotated Bibliography acts as a curated list of our resources, each explained and contextualized, to help act as a map to guide your artist-activist inquiry.

Swipe to see an example of the new page. We can't wait to hear what you think!

Join Stockton University for a multi-event celebration to honor Indigenous People’s Day! This is held in conjunction with the university’s current Art Gallery exhibition, “Indigenous Approaches, Sustainable Futures,” sponsored by the School of Arts & Humanities. The exhibit highlights more than 25 international and local Indigenous artists exploring the relationship between land, identity and sustainability.

The schedule of events includes Reading & Recognition of Place, a Lenapehoking Indigenous Youth Group performance, a documentary and panel talk on the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Tribal Nation, and In Conversation: Indigenous Life & Culture.

Join us on Thursday October 17th for our next Artist Meetup!

During our August and September Meetups, our dedicated members worked tirelessly to establish the beginnings of our "rules of the road" for creating a safe, trusting critique space.

(Jacob here: I'm a bit behind on publishing last month's blog entry, but expect to see it, and all of our community members' "rules," within the next week!)

Join us on Thursday September 19th for our next Artist Meetup!
Those with keen memories may notice that we've jumped directly from "Forum" meeting to "Trading Post."
This is because we are trying something new. Our cycle will now be Forum>Trading Post>Workshop.
We'll explain more during the next meetup! But for now, here's what we ask of you:
• Please consider bringing any objects/tools/resources/materials/information that you'd like to share with a community member. The Trading Posts are a space where we can altruistically trade or give material to better the health of our community.
A portion of our meetup will also be dedicated to devising community agreements, a set of rules that will help us to feel heard, seen, and recognized when in our workshop session in October.
Please RSVP for this meetup via the link in our bio, using the QR, or visiting our website and navigating to "Artist Meetups," where you'll see RSVP links to all upcoming meetups.

Can't wait to see you!
