With the arrival of December, Stuttgart comes alive with thousands of LED lights.
In the middle of city on the Schlossplatz (palace square), the fountains and five light figures, representative of important aspects in Stuttgart, elegantly illuminate the city center. Adding to the merriment is the nearby Christmas market with its 300 festive stalls offering gifts and handcrafts and delicious food and drink.

The 24-foot high light installations on the Schlossplatz represent some of the city's most important tourist landmarks: a Mercedes 300 SL and a Porsche 911, symbolic for the two automobile museums; the elephant for the
Wilhelma Zoologisch-Botanischer Garten Stuttgart; the Ferris wheel for the Cannstatter Wasen where the annual beer festival is held; and the Stuttgart Rössle, known from the city's coat of arms, completes the scenery. Before the impressive backdrop of the New Palace, the lights are illuminated every day starting at 5 pm. A sound show takes place every half hour. This year, the two fountains on the Schlossplatz are integrated into the lighting concept along with Concordia, the anniversary column.

Stuttgart’s famous Christmas market with its beautifully decorated stalls is only steps away. A range of wares, including handmade wooden toys, crib figurines, arts and crafts, jewelery, sweet delights, mulled wine, cookies made from regional recipes, and Flammkuchen. County Kerry is well known for its stunning landscape that includes the scenic Ring of Kerry and Ireland’s highest mountain range, the MacGillyCuddy’s Reeks. But it’s not all about the great outdoors. With indoor attractions ranging from brewery tours to heritage museums, there’s plenty to do in in County Kerry on a winter visit.

In the picturesque town of Kenmare, sitting on the Wild Atlantic Way, you can visit a craft beer brewery inspired by Antarctic explorer, and Kerry man, Tom Crean. Tom Crean Brewery Kenmare produces ten different beers inspired by the explorer’s achievements, which included several expeditions to the South Pole. You can take a tour of the brewery to find out how the beers are sustainably created and hear about his life and adventures.

If whiskey or gin is your tipple, head to Skellig Six18 Distillery, Caherciveen, to enjoy a distillery tour. The distillery takes its name from the number of steps needed to reach the summit of the legendary Skellig Island which lies off the coast. The distillery produces artisan, premium, handcrafted gin, distilled in small batches and using botanicals from the surrounding landscape. It has recently released its single pot still whiskey.

One of Kerry’s most popular destinations is the pretty town of Di**le on the peninsula. A mixture of old-style Ireland and trendy restaurants and coffee shops, it has long been a magnet for musicians and artists. Here you can drop into Dick Mack's Brewhouse for a pint and a tour of the brewery or browse the local art galleries or eclectic range of shops.

Di**le is also home to WAVE Di**le, a unique celebration of the culture, traditions and maritime heritage of the Di**le Peninsula. The immersive experience takes you through a series of spaces housing large-scale projections and soundscapes to discover the under-water sea life of Di**le Bay, the shipwrecks that lie beneath and the myths and legends of the ocean.

Inland, the market town of Listowel is known for its annual literary festival, which takes place in May. The literary credentials continue in its first-class Kerry Writers Museum celebrating the county’s writers, which is open all year round. You can book a Windows of Wonder guided tour during which you will be immersed in the words of its famous sons including John B Keane, Brendan Kennelly and Bryan MacMahon. The tour is led by a costumed character and the writings brought to life in readings performed by a Seanchaí (Irish storyteller).

Hyundai’s Kona N Line AWD is simply a terrific car. It was developed with a determined focus on enhanced driving dynamics and responsive performance and it delivers — on the highway, nice suburban cul de sacs and pot-holed riddled city streets. There is plenty of agility thanks to a long wheelbase, short overhangs and a multi-link rear suspension with stabilizer bar.

The N Line is a sport AWD with sport seating with red accents, and an aggressive, wing-shaped front and rear fascia designs that signals that it is not to be missed with — this is the real deal.

Not only does it offer a comfortable ride with plenty of headroom 39.9 inches in the front, legroom 41.7 inches and shoulder room 55.2 inches but the new Kona offers an available next-generation infotainment system with advanced graphic user interface with a 12.3-inch panoramic display screen. The eight-speaker Bose Premium Sound System plus subwoofer let us blast the tunes and enjoy the ride even more.

For safety, we loved the Surround View Monitor displays from various driver-selectable viewpoints. Kona also offers available driving convenience functions, such as Smart Cruise Control (SCC), Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control (NSCC) with stop and go, Parking Distance Warning (forward/side/reverse with contour warning), and Remote Start. Safe and easy parking, indeed.

𝐒𝐮𝐛𝐚𝐫𝐮 𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐤: 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐎𝐟𝐟 𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐬 🚙

Car commercials touting the off-road capabilities of cars always confuses us. Honestly, how many people go off roading in the family car? We’re more concerned about highway and city driving capabilities then going off to the wild blue yonder — that is until you find yourself off in the wild blue yonder.

That’s exactly what happened to us when we spent the weekend at an inn located on acres and acres of land with no paved roads. There were, however, lots of gravel, rain-filled potholes and twists and turns galore. Not only did the Subaru of America, Inc. Crosstrek Limited, with its standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, handle the challenges with ease, but it was fun. We went from cautiously going into the potholes and bumps with a bit of trepidation and ended the weekend joyously speeding up a bit. We didn’t even use the Dual-Function X-MODE that lets you customize the traction to match the trail. Imagine even how much more comfortable our adventure would have been?

Imagine what driving the Crosstrek in civilization is like? We’ll tell you — fabulous. This is a delightful car that does it all. The SUV has a bit of a rugged edge but with smooth lines making it appealing to all. This all wheel drive vehicle focuses on substance and performance over fancy stylish bells and whistles. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine quickly accelerates and the 182-horsepower provides all the power needed to navigate highway driving.

The car offers a comfortable ride with the cabin again built for function. The seats were well padded and was comfortable thanks to its 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat. The 11.6-inch tablet-style touchscreen provided crisp pictures when backing up and it was easy to select radio stations — even while driving. The Subaru Starlink System is easy to navigate and include Bluetooth, Apps, Wi-Fi Hotspot, and navigation. We had an upgraded Harman Kardon six speaker system, but we have to admit it, we had to turn it way up to hear the songs properly.

The Crosstrek is easy to drive and comes with a lot of bells and whistles for its modest price of around $30,000. There is plenty of USB ports as well as heated seats and wireless phone charger. We loved the EyeSight feature that keeps an eye out for traffic movement from two cameras mounted high on the windshield and lets you know that you’re crushing out of your lane. For those gas conscious, it gets about 20 miles per gallon combined city/highway.

Like others in the Subaru line, the Crosstrek offers amazing value, outstanding quality and a vehicle that will last for years.
