J. Cole apologized for replying to the Kendrick Lamar diss. Cole expressed how he felt the pressure to respond to the Kendrick feature "Like That" off of the Future and Metro Boomin project by his fans and friends. J. Cole stated that the people wanted blood but it wasn't in his heart and didn't sit right with his spirit.
He's probably recieved more flack for denouncing the track "7 Minute Drill". I think Cole thought he did something damaging to Kendrick's career or disrespectful. Let's be clear. Cole's record was not in the realm of No Vaseline, Hit em Up, Takeover or even the very mid Ether. I don't think anybody expected anything on that level seeing as there's not a real beef, but people did want to hear the response.
Drake, Kendrick and Cole have been grouped together as the big 3 of their generation. Kendrick has taken shots a few times to try and separate himself as the superior talent of the 3. Cole talks about being top tier as a lyricist and this was his chance to prove it. Personally I think Cole is bowing out because the response wasn't so great. Had he came out as the winner in this round I think his tone would be a tad bit different.
Hip Hop fans are waiting to see how this unfolds and will Drake throw his hat in the ring seeing that K. Dot's verse seemed to have The Toronto rapper in the scope for the most part. Drake probably had one of the last great diss songs in my opinion with Back to Back. Can he or will he do it again? Since J. Cole has bowed out as he's apparently not built for the smoke.
What are your thoughts on the battle so far?
