Our Southern Story
Southern Fried Karma was founded by Steve McCondichie, a man who spent the first 25 years of his adult career selling heavy equipment and managing real estate. His path took an unlikely turn in January 2015, after he earned his MFA in Creative Writing from Queens University of Charlotte in North Carolina. It was then that he really took notice of the power shift in the business of publishing.
In December of that same year, SFK came into existence from humble beginnings. It all started with Steve’s debut novel, LYING FOR A LIVING, and some periodic blog posts highlighting different Southern perspectives. From there, creative minds came and went, offering raw, diverse talent that helped broaden the independent publishing company’s perspective and add nuance to its identity through diversity.
Now, SFK has fully published three novels and a long list of upcoming titles from promising authors. Each Wednesday, it offers a dollop of Southern edge through THE NEW SOUTHERN FUGITIVES zine, and it makes a handful of writers’ dreams of seeing their work published become reality through yearly contests.
The SFK family itself has grown through a deep love of the South. The team travels regularly to spread awareness of our beloved brand. We all hope that y’all will fall in love with SFK as much as we have. We invite you to join us on this journey of diversifying and unifying the South.
