The view from behind the guitar today as I mic-ing for

My conversion has me seeking a better representation of the natural tone of the guitar in the room, and less reliance on processing and fx to get great sounds.

Today, I’ll be running all 6 of these at the same time and playing in a variety of styles, then listening back comparatively:

1) Two LA120 small diaphragm condensers in an XY configuration placed directly over the soundhole (I got the idea for this configuration from a video on the best microphone configuration for fingerstyle guitar and I’ve had great results with it.

2) VMS aimed at the neck joint from about 18”, which will allow me to try a few different models of vintage large diaphragm condensers

3) pointed at the neck joint from about 18”. In the past, I’ve found this one a bit bright for acoustic guitar, but it might work well the warmer sound of my solid mahogany guitar.

4) Fathead ribbon microphone pointed at the neck joint from about 18”. I haven’t seen a lot of folks use this mic on acoustic guitar, but sometimes different can be great.

5) pointed at the lower bout. Of course! You can never really go wrong with an SM57, and I’ve gotten some cool punchy woody tones mixing acoustics this way.

Which one will sound the best for a natural room sound?
How will different mics react to different playing styles?
What different situations will suit each mic the best?

This is going to be a fun day!!!
