WE TOOK IN A HOMELESS MAN FOR THE WINTER — BEFORE LEAVING, HE LEFT US A PACKAGE.
For months, I saw Jeff, a homeless man outside work. He never begged, looked clean but shabby, and he repaired shoes — including mine. That's when I learned he was kind, educated, and mostly stayed in shelters.
One freezing night, I found him holding a package in a closing café.
Me: "Jeff, got a place to stay?"
Jeff: "No luck with the shelter, but I'll manage."
Worried, I offered him a bed in our basement. He hesitated but agreed. The next morning, we woke up to the smell of breakfast. Jeff was cooking while my kids laughed at his jokes. Later, I noticed he had fixed everything that had been broken in the basement and cleaned our shoes. I nervously asked my husband if we could offer Jeff a place for the winter. To my surprise, he agreed. Jeff became like family — I could always count on him.
