DMR 018: A Million Years in the Future by Thomas P. Kelley
Cover art by Hannes Bok
Release date: August 2020

Some of DMR Books’ reprints were things that I as a fan had longed to see happen for some time. Others I just stumbled upon when looking for cool stuff to reprint. A Million Years in the Future falls in the latter category.

This novel was originally serialized in Weird Tales in 1940. The title is meant literally, as it takes place precisely in the year 1,001,940! For countless millennia, Earth has been ravaged by the Black Raiders from the distant planet Capara. The last surviving Earthman, Prince Jan, is captured by the Raiders and taken to their home planet. The immortal and lascivious ruler of Capara, Queen Tara, decrees that Jan will fight for his life as a gladiator in the Great Games.

Jan’s only desire is to avenge his decimated planet, and a path to this goal lies on the forbidden Moon of Madness. It is said that a god lies dormant in the Black Tower, guarded by Vampire-Women. This god knows Queen Tara’s secret weakness, which, if exploited, will bring about the complete annihilation of Capara!

With places and characters named things like the Moon of Lost Souls, the Nine Terrible Sisters, the Castle in the Clouds, and the Red Fire People, you know you’re getting one wild adventure.

DMR 017: The Eye of Sounnu by Schuyler Hernstrom
Cover art by Brian LeBlanc
Foreword by P. Alexander
Release date: May 2020

I first discovered Schuyler “Sky” Hernstrom’s writing in the first issue of Cirsova Magazine back in 2016. His story “The Gift of the Ob-Men” was the highlight of an impressive debut issue, and made his name one to remember. The following issue proved that he was no one hit wonder. “The Images of the Goddess,” a Jack Vance-inspired science-fantasy tale, was an immediate hit among the readers of Cirsova.

With Hernstrom’s gifts for imagining bizarre worlds, compelling action, and direct but thoughtful storytelling, he was the perfect fit for DMR Books. I reached out to him about collecting his Cirsova stories and novellas in one book, and he readily agreed. He even wrote a brand new story, “The Tragedy of Thurn,” specifically for this collection.

Coming on the heels of Renegade Swords and Swordsmen from the Stars, The Eye of Sounnu was the third big hit in a row for DMR Books. Many readers name Sky as their favorite current author in the S&S/sci fi adventure scene.
