As tributes from the last week have shown, former First Lady Rossalyn Carter's influence and legacy is enormous. Today we honor her with an excerpt from an essay titled "The President's Partner" by Scott Kaufman from Georgia Women: Their Lives and Times, Volume 2 edited by Kathleen Ann Clark and Ann Short Chirhart. RIP, Mrs. Carter.

Earlier this week I found myself engaged in a pointless social media thread on the correct pronunciation of the late Rosalynn Carter’s first name, after which I realized that everyone commenting wi…

"From old shame about traditional mountain foodways, recounted in earlier novels and memoirs, emerges a new pride, seen first in the works of more recent Appalachian authors and later on menus as the farm-to-table movement began celebrating ramps and sorghum, ingredients harvested in the mountains for generations. . . . If we are truly what we eat, then Appalachians are as complex as the food of their rugged land."
—C.A. Carlson, from a review of APPALACHIA ON THE TABLE for Our State Magazine

What is Appalachian cuisine? After finding her grandmother’s cookbook, an author combs through the region’s culinary history to find the answer.

"It’s possible that my ancestor Lewis Brownmiller still lies in an unmarked grave in an unknown field. Thousands upon thousands of Civil War dead met such a fate. But in Final Resting Places, we’re reminded of why it’s important to memorialize those of the fallen that we can, and how doing so contributes to our greater understanding of the war and ourselves."
