I miss Tiny Mix Tapes. Throwback to this day 5 years ago, Null Zone had the honor of being one of TMT's favorite record labels of 2018. Listed alongside some serious legends like kranky, Fat Possum, and Geographic North, that s**t made my year.

2018 was definitely our most active year so far with 22 released cassettes, but we're slowly working our way back, and finally getting into releasing some vinyl. 2024 is shaping up to be our best year yet, so y'all keep yr peepers peeled for all the great stuff we have in store.

With the release of last Friday's two live albums from The Electric Nature, we move into hibernation mode until the Spring when we'll start back up with a pretty heavy release schedule. Many thanks for the support over the weekend, and we'll be back at it in just a few months. Much love to all the folks keeping it real, and even more to the haters. ❤

Hi, friends. Today we've got two new releases from The Electric Nature available from Null Zone.

It's been a busy year for The Electric Nature. In March, they dropped their first vinyl LP on FEEDING TUBE RECORDS and Null Zone, and went on a two week Spring tour up and down the East Coast. Another full length cassette on Eiderdown Records followed in September, along with another month-long tour in the Fall. And now, to close out the year, two live albums that not only showcase opposing shades of the group's expansive sound, but also have completely different material than both proper albums.

Back in May of this year, Michael Pierce, Michael Potter, and Thom Strickland went into Gift Horse Studios in Athens, GA, and recorded a day's worth of electronic material to be used for a new album by The Electric Nature. Potter then mixed that material into a few open-ended psychedelic noise jams that he loaded onto a sampler to improvise on top of. Since the rest of the group wasn't able to make another jaunt after their Spring tour, Potter booked a solo month-long trek between September and October to coincide with the new album on Eiderdown, and used this material as the backdrop for each night's performance.

Armed with a guitar, a sampler, and a table full of electronic noise devices, Potter improvised either alone or with sets of other musicians depending on the locale. Each new cast of players, having never previously heard the material, brought their own unique styles and perspectives to the performances. Because of this, each night was a completely different experience.

N/ZD1 - The Electric Nature - 'Live in Troy' is a recording of Eric Hardiman (Rambutan, Burnt Hills, Tape Drift Records), Zoots Houston (Negative Raxx, Rider/Horse, + many collabs), and Michael Potter improvising along with these full-Athens-unit samples, and to great success! Hardiman playing a heavily effected electric guitar provides the perfect counterpoint to Houston's intuitive, languidly melodic lap steel runs, draped over beds of psychedelically-tinged noisescapes. The ending cosmic-industrial jam turns into a pure and blissful chaos, the players all reaching various stages of Nirvana by the finish.

RIYL: Throbbing Gristle, Heldon, Pink Floyd's 'Live at Pompeii'

N/ZD2 - The Electric Nature - 'Live in Athens', recorded two months later, sees Michaels Pierce and Potter going in the opposite direction. On a cool Fall evening in Athens, GA, opening for percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani, The Electric Nature performed a 33-minute long guitar duet of mostly controlled feedback. Rumbling bass tones and Blade Runner-esque shards of sound briefly overtake and then wash away from the restrained ambience the duo wring out of their instruments. A different approach altogether from the Troy show, but a sound that is unmistakably The Electric Nature.

Hi, friends. Null Zone is back in action today with two new cassette releases for your enjoyment!

N/Z052 - Parish / Potter - 'On and Off' - This is the first full length release from the improvisational guitar duo of Shane Parish and Michael Potter, and their as yet only other offering aside from a 7" lathe that came out early last year. This album consists of two live performances - dual electric guitars on side A, and dual acoustic guitars on side B. The players have a loose but confident dialogue, with Potter laying down sonic beds of ambient soundscapes for Parish to twist and spindle his strings across. It's interesting that the performances that ended up on this tape are the 2nd time this duo ever played together (side A) and the 2nd to last time they have played together (side B), and these were recorded one year apart from each other almost to the day. Cassette edition of 100.

N/Z053 - Michael Potter - 'Michael Potter & Friends' - This is a collection of three live performances from the past year of Potter joined by some of his improvising friends in Athens, GA. The first track is Potter on electric guitar and Lydian Brambila on electric cello playing a doomed-out noise blues drone dirge. The second track is an ambient piece with Potter on synth and effects, Shane Parish on electric guitar, and John Kiran Fernandes on clarinet. It was recorded at the Foxglove Plant Bar in Athens for an "ambient plant show". Track three is Potter on electronics, electric guitar, and effects, and Shane Parish on acoustic guitar, and was recorded on MP's birthday last year at the (formerly) Bombs Away house venue. Three pieces of varying intensity that still compliment each other quite well. Cassette edition of 100.
