"Hi. I’m Luis Leal. I mixed Great Lakes' Contenders.
When Ben and I decided to work together on Contenders, we both talked a lot about what we wanted the mixes to become. We talked a lot about Teenage Fanclub’s Grand Prix and Tom Petty’s Wildflowers, which are both favorites of ours. I did a pretty deep dive on the where’s and when’s and what’s of these records and got to do what we all love about music, transport myself away for a little while. Coupled with my own favorite engineers that I’m influenced by and me wanting to convey the idea of this being a distinctly “70s New York” type of record, I had a lot to keep me inspired.
My personal favorite on the record is “I’m Not Listening”. Ben shared it with me while we were already pretty far along with the mixing of what was becoming Contenders. I fell in love with the “Twin Peaks” kind of vibe of the guitars, and I wanted to make the drums sound bombastic and rude. I can’t remember if it was the same night I heard it, or if it was the next day, but I had suggested that Ben throw in a guitar break, to which he replied with this almost Robert Fripp style solo that shut me right up. Got it mixed in one revision."
