Yesterday we recorded a Ranat. What is a Ranat? It’s a Thai traditional xylophone. This instrument sounds amazing, with a beautiful tone. The bamboo bars are suspended by cords over a boat-shaped trough resonator.

Voo Doo Birds, today is day 5. People have been asking how could you record 15 songs is 8 hours. So here you go. To begin, there was 6 to 8 hours of preparation before the recording.

Each drum was carefully tuned and the microphones were placed on the drum kit. The piano was tuned. All the mics were setup and checked.

For the current project, the Voo Doo Birds, the rhythm section came in a day early, to set up all their stuff. The headphone system was optimized for them and all the mics were placed. The following day, we begin recording.

Recording with Bob Stewart playing Accordion and National Guitar today. I decided to bring out some vintage microphones. Bang and Olufsen B3 ribbon mic on the Accordion. EV 660 on the National Guitar. A little bit of history-Bang and Olufsen B3 was the inspiration for Royer ribbon mics.

A few weeks ago I posted about upgrading our Hammond Organ. Here is an update. Yesterday, Phil installed the new Trek 2 pre amp. Our Hammond A-100 has never sounded better. This organ is the real deal built in 1964. The clones sound pretty good but if you AB them, the real Hammond wins. The Hammond has physical tone wheels spinning inside of it, that’s what generates the sound. Sure, we use our Nord Electro sometimes, it’s super easy for a quick overdub. Enough said..

Working on the newest Passion Works recording today.

We started doing maintenance on our 1964 Hammond A-100, today. The A-100 is the same as the B-3, in a smaller cabinet. We try to go through everything every 2 years. We began the day with cleaning all the contacts and drawbars. We oiled the tone generators and the start and run motors are working perfectly.

My good friend Phil Ohlinger is here for any electrical issues.

Phil builds some of the best sounding guitar amp that I have ever heard.

Don Baker recorded 5 new songs yesterday. We have recorded over 30 of Don’s songs since 2022. He is planning to release 10 or 12 songs in the near future.

Yesterday, we did a lot of overdubs. John Borchard and Mark Hellenberg, adding parts to songs, written by Bob Stewart. John played Pedal Steel and Dobro. Mark played a variety of percussion instruments. It was a very fun day and very productive.
