A HYMN FOR TODAY -- from 2012, and 1903
Where cross the crowded ways of life,
Where sound the cries of race and clan
Above the noise of selfish strife,
We hear Your voice, O Son of Man.
In haunts of wretchedness and need,
On shadowed thresholds dark with fears,
From paths where hide the lures of greed,
We catch the vision of Your tears.
The cup of water giv'n for You,
Still holds the freshness of Your grace;
Yet long these multitudes to view
The sweet compassion of Your face.
O Master, from the mountainside
Make haste to heal these hearts of pain;
Among these restless throngs abide;
O tread the city's streets again.
LM (8.8.8.8 - Frank Mason North, 1903, alt.
Tune: GERMANY – Gardiner's Sacred Melodies, 1815
#403 in Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs, 2012

A HYMN FOR TODAY β€” from 2012, and 1871
Our day of praise is done;
The evening shadows fall;
But pass not from us with the sun,
True light that lightest all.
Around the throne on high,
Where night can never be,
The white-robed angels of the sky
Bring ceaseless hymns to Thee.
A little while, and then
Shall come the glorious end;
And songs of angels and of men
In perfect praise shall blend.
SM (6.6.8.6) – John Ellerton, 1871
Tune: ST. THOMAS – Aaron Williams, 1763
#136 in Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs, 2012
Often labelled "an evening hymn," this is as much a hymn of that bright and glorious morning!

A HYMN FOR TODAY - from 2012, and 2009
Lord, let us be like-minded,
And unified in prayer,
With each new day reminded
Of all the love we share.
Lord, purify our purpose,
Remove our vain conceit,
And take ambition from us,
That we may be complete.
Lord, let us serve together,
As children without blame,
That we may live forever
United by Your name.
7.6.7.6 – Jennifer L. Payne, 2009
Tune: WAXAHACHIE – C.A. Roberts, 2009
#342 in Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs

A HYMN FOR TODAY β€” from 1868, and 2012
Savior, again to Thy dear name we raise
With one accord our parting hymn of praise;
We stand to bless Thee ere our worship cease,
Then, lowly kneeling, wait Thy word of peace.
Grant us Thy peace upon our homeward way;
With Thee began, with Thee shall end the day.
Guard thou the lips from sin, the hearts from shame,
That in this house have called upon Thy name.
Grant us Thy peace, Lord, through the coming night;
Turn Thou for us its darkness into light;
From harm and danger keep Thy children free,
For dark and light are both alike to Thee.
Grant us Thy peace throughout our earthly life,
Peace to Thy church from error and from strife,
Peace to our land, the fruit of truth and love,
Peace in each heart, Thy Spirit from above.
Thy peace in life, the balm of every pain;
Thy peace in death, the hope to rise again;
Then, when Thy voice shall bid our conflict cease,
Call us, O Lord, to Thine eternal peace.
19.10.10.10 – John Ellerton, 1868
Tune: ELLERS – Edward J. Hopkins, 1869
#475 in Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs, 2012

A HYMN FOR TODAY β€” from 2012 and 1844
We walk by faith and not by sight;
No gracious words we hear
From Him who spoke as man ne'er spoke,
But we believe Him near.
We may not touch His hands and side,
Nor follow where He trod;
But in His promise we rejoice,
And cry, "My Lord and God!"
Help then, O Lord, our unbelief;
And may our faith abound,
To call on You when You are near
And seek where You are found.
That, when our life of faith is done,
In realms of clearer light
We may behold You as You are,
With full and endless sight.

A HYMN FOR TODAY -- from 2012, and 1868
How Can I Keep From Singing?
My life flows on in endless song;
Above earth's lamentation
I hear the real though far-off hymn
That hails a new creation:
Through all the tumult and the strife
I hear its music ringing;
It sounds an echo in my soul.
How can I keep from singing?
What though the tempest loudly roars?
The Lord my Savior liveth,
And though the darkness 'round me close,
Songs in the night He giveth;
No storm can shake my inmost calm
While to that rock I'm clinging.
Since Christ is Lord of heav'n and earth,
How can I keep from singing?
When tyrants tremble in their fear
And hear their death knell ringing,
When friends rejoice both far and near,
How can I keep from singing?
In prison cell and dungeon vile
Our thoughts to them are winging;
When friends by shame are undefiled,
How can I keep from singing?
8.7.8.7.D – Robert Lowry, 1868 – New York Observer, 1868
Tune: ENDLESS SONG–Robert Lowry, 1869 (popular arrangement) #396 in Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs, 2012

A HYMN FOR TODAY β€” from 2012, and 2000
The Rock of My Heart
My Lord, I need nothing beside You;
Without You, I could not have stood.
Your promise is my hope and my refuge;
Your nearness, my strength and my good.
When I was distressed and embittered,
By things I could not understand,
Your presence was continually with me;
You always took hold of my hand.
I know that Your counsel will guide me
In wisdom, devotion, and love,
And afterward You'll call me to glory
To dwell in Your presence above.
My heart may be broken within me;
My earthly strength may depart.
But You are my portion forever,
You are the Rock of my heart.
You are the Rock of my heart.
9.8.10.8 – M. W. Bassford, 2000
From Psalm 73:2, 21-28
Tune: Glenda B. Schales, 2000

A HYMN FOR TODAY β€” from 2012, and 1695
The strife is o'er, the battle done;
The victory of life is won;
The song of triumph has begun:
Alleluia!
The pow'rs of death have done their worst,
But Christ their legions has dispersed;
Let shouts of holy joy outburst:
Alleluia!
The three sad days are quickly sped;
He rises glorious from the dead;
All glory to our risen head!
Alleluia!
8.8.8 with Alleluias – Symphonia Sirena Selectarum, 1695
tr. Francis Pott, 1861
Tune: VICTORY – Giovanni P. da Palestrina, 1591
arr. William H. Monk, 1861

A HYMN FOR TODAY β€” from 2012, and 1855
My faith, it is an oaken staff,
A trav'ler's well-loved aid.
My faith, it is a weapon stout,
A soldier's trusty blade.
I'll travel on and still be stirred
By silent thought or social word,
By all my perils undeterred,
A soldier-pilgrim staid.
I have a guide, and in His steps
When travelers have trod,
Whether beneath was flinty rock
Or yielding grassy sod,
They cared not, but with force unspent,
Unmoved by pain, they onward went;
Unstayed by pleasures, still they bent
Their zealous course to God.
My faith, it is an oaken staff;
O let me on it lean!
My faith, it is a trusty sword;
May falsehood find it keen!
Thy spirit, Lord, to me impart;
O make me what Thou ever art,
Of patient and courageous heart,
As all true saints have been.
8.6.8.6.8.8.8.6 – Thomas T. Lynch, 1855
Tune: The Staff of Faith – Fellowship Hymn Book, 1908
#499 in Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs, 2012

Sumphonia Is...

Sumphonia was founded in autumn of 2002 and registered as a nonprofit foundation whose purposes are to compose, publish, and promote hymns for congregational worship. Our hymnal, Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs is one of many tools that we have created to help congregations and individuals grow spiritually and enrich lives of personal devotion through worship.
