I had the pleasure of speaking with Ken Starratt, co-founder of the Squalls, a pivotal band in Athens' alternative music scene. Alongside bandmates Bob Hay, Diana Torell, AL Walsh, Mark Cooper Smith (drums), and Mig Little (vocals), they shaped the musical landscape with four releases from 1981–1989, touring extensively. Their 2022 album, "Live from the 40 Watt," captures the essence of '80s dance parties, showcasing their unique sound. Alongside Athens legends like The B-52’s and R.E.M., the Squalls are immortalized in the documentary "Athens, GA: Inside/Out" (1986). Ken's passion for Athens' music scene remains evident, as he discusses its ongoing vibrancy with emerging bands. Here's my insightful conversation with Ken Starratt.

My guest on my next Episode on AthCastMusic is none other than Bill Cody. As many Athenians know Bill was the producer of the 1987 documentary, “Inside/Out Athens,” and director of the 2021 Sequel “Inside/Out2: Red turns into Blue.” However, that is a small part of all the things that Bill did while traveling between LA and Athens. He made Athens his home several years ago and I talked with Bill about what Athens means to him and so much more!

My Podcast with Jim White is now on all platforms. Spotify, Apple, I❤️radio, and many other platforms where you may listen. My conversation with Jim was very special as Jim marches to the beat of a different drummer. His music can be somewhat painful to hear when his lyrics take you on his mental illness journey. His book does exactly the same thing. If you haven’t read Jim’s book “Incidental Contact,” I would highly recommend it. Be prepared to think a lot though. We are so fortunate to have Jim here in Athens.
