Hydroseeding Grass Installment FAQ

What’s that green stuff I keep seeing people spray on their bare dirt and then grass grows up out of it? Well, we are glad you asked!

That’s called, Hydroseeding.

What is Hydroseeding?

Hydroseeding is a grass seed installation technique that evenly spreads a compound mixture of grass “slurry” over bare/prepped soil to grow grass and prevent dirt/soil erosion.

What is Slurry?

The term “slurry” refers to the mixture that is sprayed out of the hose of the hydroseeding machine. The mix is usually made up of grass seed, mulch, water, fertilizer, along with green-tinted dye (the dye is a marker that shows the installer where they have or have not sprayed during the installation process. The dye also offers an instant gratification effect, giving off the aesthetic appearance of green ground covering.) Other types of additives can be used upon customer request, but may incur additional costs to the project.

What type of grass seed is offered in the Hydroseeding option?

Primarily, Bama Dirt offers Common Bermuda or a Fescue Mix Grass. Other options “may” be available upon request, but may come at an additional cost or may have limited availability due to seasonal factors.

Is Hydroseeding Expensive?

Each Hydroseed project requires the same type of soil preparation as seed/straw installation or sod installation. So there is an upfront cost to any Hydroseed project, due to the soil preparation required. Some of these factors include , but are not limited to, removal of existing grass, topsoil installment, Harley Raking soil to prepare for seeding, or addressing any other erosion issues in relation to the area being Hydroseeded.

In comparison to the cost of other types of grass installation, Hydroseeding is right in the middle.

Seed and Straw: broadcasting grass seed and spreading wheat straw is usually the CHEAPEST option.

Sod: Installing sod is usually the most EXPENSIVE.

Hydroseeding: A Hydroseeding Application is the “middle of the road” option when it comes to price. It is more expensive than just broadcasting seed and then spreading wheat straw, but is usually MUCH cheaper than installing sod.

The only way to provide you an EXACT price is to allow Bama Dirt to provide you an in person estimate. Estimates are encouraged and are a free service. Every Hydroseeding project requires soil prep, which is a step that must be addressed before the Hydroseeding is performed.

In most cases, the minimum cost on any Hydroseed installment can be expected to be $3,500, plus.

Again, an estimate is the only way to provide an exact price.

Water is Required for Hydroseeding Install:

Bama Dirt will source the water required to fill the tanks of the Hydroseeder. Depending on the size of the project, 1,000s of gallons of water may be required to properly install the seed. Bama Dirt will pay for the water needed, not leaving an unpaid fee to the customer from their water department. This is all factored into the cost of the project.

Additionally, it is recommended that any property area that is to be Hydroseeded also have water access on site for the purpose of providing water irrigation of the newly installed seed.

DISCLAIMER: Hydroseeding Growth and Maintenance Required

The Homeowner/Property Owner will need to be prepared to provide aftercare once the seed is installed.

The grass seed requires PLENTY of water. A sprinkler system is needed, whether it be an underground irrigation system or a water hose and sprinkler attachment, the Hydroseeded area MUST get adequate water DAILY. Although the customer may see germination of the seed (sprouting) within the first week, there needs to be an irrigation plan in place for the next 4-6 weeks.

Hydroseeding does not necessarily require more water than seeding or sod installment projects, but the liability of the grass growth is left to the customer, once the seed is installed.

The grass seed will be professionally installed, but Bama Dirt will not be liable for patchy areas, dead grass, or failed seed germination; failure is usually attributed to lack of moisture or lack of watering.

BAMA DIRT DOES NOT GUARANTEE THE SUCCESS RATE OR VITALITY OF THE GRASS SEED THAT HAS BEEN HYDROSEEDED.
