Let’s see those Court Cards

In the Tarot Medieval there are four “temples” of the minor arcana—Swords (which is attributed to Fire rather than Air), Scepters (Wands, Air), Cups and Shekels. The sixteen court cards are Pages, Knights, Kings and Queens, with each group’s images telling a story unique to their suit:

“The Scepter court reveal a Page who goes forth as a messenger, a Knight whose blunt honor defends the loving Queen and the King’s domain. The Cup court shows the search for the Grail, with the Page bringing the vessel as an acolyte, the Knight as the quester, the Queen as the embodiment of the Grail, while the elderly King is like the Wounded King.

The Sword court deals with the challenging things: the Page attempts to release prisoners from a dank dungeon, the Knight holds truth as his bond, the Queen defends her own castle, while the King is hasty in his decisions. The Shekel court presents us with a Byzantine King and Queen, with a Knight who guards their treasure, and a Page who is literally shackled to money or poverty.”

Each card helps to personify a unique aspect of their suit. We really appreciate the unified design of the Knight cards, but our favorite among these is probably the Queen of Scepters.

The Major Arcana of the Tarot Medieval

Original author Rolt-Wheeler suggested that the minor arcana be used for “everyday” divination, while the majors be used more for pathworking and major spiritual queries. With The Fool placed penultimate to The World, Rolt-Wheeler borrows from Paul Christian’s concept of intiatory patterns within the major arcana, with cards 1 – 9 attributed to the Lesser Mysteries, cards 10-18 to the Greater Mysteries, and cards 19-22 to the Great Alchemical Work. This arcana, along with the rest of the deck, are an incredible tool for both pathworking and practical cartomancy.

The artwork of The Lovers and The Sun cards stands out to us, with artwork and interpretation of The Lovers offering some different perspectives than “standards”, and imagery on The Sun card being somewhat reminiscent of The Lovers in the RWS. We also love The Star card in the Tarot Medieval especially.

In the Tarot Medieval, The Fool is numbered as XXI rather than as 0, and is placed between XX Judgment and XXII The World. This is based on Oswald Wirth’s system as derived from Eliphas Levi, arguably the first person to correspond the Hebrew alphabet with the Major Arcana, attributing the Fool to the 21st Hebrew letter Shin rather than to Aleph.

From the original author Francis Rolt-Wheeler:
“Shin is the twenty-first letter of the Hebrew alphabet associated with [The Fool]: Shin is the messianic letter that governs the head of Adam Kadmon, the Cosmic Man, and that corresponds to the Divine Spark. For Qabalists, there is a direct rapport between Shin, Shaddai, and the arcana of the Fool…

In numerology, it is impossible to ignore the following sequence 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 = 21. XXI is the Number of All, and also the Lost Number; it is equally the “the transmutation of the quarternary into the quintessence,” according to the arithmetic of the Rosicrucians.

In exoteric astrology, the Fool is associated with the earth; in esoteric astrology, the association is with Fire.

In magical operations, the magical name of the Fool is “the Genius of Transformation.””

“Tarot Medieval: The Mysteries of the Initiate’s Path” is a piece of Tarot history that was almost lost in time. Original author Francis Rolt-Wheeler was a writer and esotericist of the Oswald Worth school who was especially interested in tarot for initiatory pathworking. Partnering with artist Christian Loring they triumphantly brought to life the Tarot Medieval in 1939-- a luminous, dreamlike deck which rich initiatic and Kabbalistic significance-- only to have nearly every copy destroyed the following year during the German occupation of France.

In this new edition, renowned Tarot author Caitlin Matthews has meticulously translated and revised Rolt-Wheelers original French and has also contributed her own rich content. The resulting 216-page guidebook details the history and magical influences of the Tarot Medieval, reviews Tarot and Kabbalistic pathworking, and includes detailed card interpretations relating to both initiatic and basic divinatory meanings.

The cards, whose art has been carefully restored by renowned artist Wil Kinghan, feature beautiful artistry in stark contrast to most other decks which were available at the time. These include 22 Major Arcana, 16 Court Cards, and 40 Pip cards in the suits of Cups, Swords, Scepters and Shekels.
