Eleanor says: “Alabama the Beautiful” - I am proud to live on a family farm where I’m able to experience the beauty of Alabama daily and contribute to agritourism in our state by growing crops which I sell at our local farmers market. Our family loves supporting other agritourism farms throughout the year, from picking strawberries, peaches and sunflowers in a Chilton County to our favorite Pumpkin patch and Christmas Tree farm in Tuscaloosa. Agritourism allows us another way to support farmers directly!

Your worth is not measured by your productivity.

I’m not sure who needs to hear this today, but it is something I need to hear fairly often.

Today I was very productive. I mean, it was one of those days when you break through blocks you’ve been hitting for weeks and are energized by the work.

But now the work day is over, and as I wrap things up for the day I’m reminded of all the work for tomorrow and next week and the rest of the month and the rest of the year. Living on a farm has taught me that there is always more work to do. This certainly applies to my “real” jobs as well. There is always more work to be done.

I love the work I do. I love the people I work with and serve through my work. But if it is only about getting the work done, I’m doomed for failure and wasting an awful lot of precious time (not to mention the emotional currency involved).

I feel blessed to have come to this understanding relatively early in life.

My worth is not measured by my productivity.

I’m not sure we can measure our true worth at all. But I know when I feel my value expressed and realized.

My value is realized when I see my little girl smile.
My value is realized when my wife and I are sitting on the couch late at night laughing (or early in the morning whining about having to start the day).
My value is realized when someone who has been hurt by the Church lets me be there in the grief with them or join their far superior dance party without asking me take off my clerical collar.
My value is realized when I’m with my parents and siblings and nieces and nephews and grandparents and all manner of in-laws and might-as-well-be-family folk.
My value is realized when I stop working in the garden long enough to watch the goats playing & birds catching bugs off the top of the pond or when I take a deep breath and look up at the night sky, both of which bring about that profound feeling of connection to creation.

My worth is not measured by my productivity.

Neither is yours.

Whether you take a step forward or a few steps back today, you are worth so much more than those steps or where they take you. The world is a better place because you are in it. I’m glad you are here. Sit down. Let everything fade away for a minute. Take a breath. Watch the birds, or the clouds, or the stars, or the people around you (ok maybe don’t watch them too closely). Feel that unbreakable connection to it all.

And remember,

Your worth is not measured by your productivity.

The ugly truth about REAL homesteading…

Our kitchens are messy! There is dirt on our floors, there's junk in our yards; the grass isn’t always cut. If one area looks clean it’s probably because another has fallen short.

The projects are never, ever complete…

We're busy like you can't even imagine, and we're usually covered in dirt and sweat.

Most days it just seems like we can’t catch up.

Often times it’s overwhelming; but somehow, we love it and just can't get enough..

Our life isn’t perfect, but it has perfect moments. ♥️
