Surface water has been warming quickly on Lake Superior the last couple weeks, now in the 60s to low 70s across much of Western Lake Superior, except portions of the North Shore which are in the mid to upper 50s. Cold water in the 40s lurks below the warm surface water, and could mix in with a strong upwelling event should it occur.

Look before you leap! As much as you’d like to jump straight into the lake, check it out first to protect yourself against blue-green algae. Avoid water that looks like spilled green paint or pea soup, is discolored or streaky, or has mats floating on top. Learn more: https://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/water/bg-algae/index.htm

There is a "boom or bust" severe storm setup expected on Monday later afternoon and through the first half of Monday night. This setup is highly conditional on all of the severe weather ingredients (which will be present) coming together in the right form. Damaging winds around 75 mph, large hail around 2" in diameter, and a few tornadoes in northern Minnesota are all potential hazards. While some heavy rain is possible a prolonged period of extreme rainfall rates is not expected.

Today will be hot and muggy, with scattered severe thunderstorms possible. We should see a break in widespread rain and thunderstorms for much of Wednesday and Thursday, though some rain is possible in southern portions of the Northland (30% chance). Rain and thunderstorms chances return across the region Friday and into the weekend.

06/17/2024

Here's the latest look at potential rainfall amounts today through early Wednesday morning. These amounts have changed a bit since the last update, but generally 0.5" to 3" around the region with locally higher amounts likely.

06/16/2024

Here's a look at satellite early this afternoon. There are some signs of convection bubbling along the front moving through NW MN. This is the area we will be monitoring for storm development over the next couple hours, with scattered severe storms possible. Initially, the primary hazard would be large hail, and as the storms push ESE and become more surface based, the damaging wind threat increases. Over NW WI, an isolated tornadic storm could be possible.

06/16/2024
06/16/2024

Confidence remains high that we will see heavy rain that could result in some flash flooding for a good portion of the region Monday through Tuesday. The locations most likely to see heavy rainfall amounts 2-3"+ will be just north of the Brainerd Lakes to Iron Range. Stay tuned for updates!

06/15/2024

Heat and humidity will increase across northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin this weekend into next week. Widespread temperatures in the 80s with dewpoints in the 60s and 70s are expected.
