Public invited to Optimist Club for Veteran Author program

The Ashland Optimist Club has a special speaker visiting them for their regular breakfast meeting on Saturday, December 14 at 7:30am.

Stan Adams will provide the program, telling about his book “Mokane to Mole City,” which details his time on the front lines of the Vietnam War. Stan’s story is also featured in the documentary film “Manchu: A Brotherhood of Sacrifice” directed by Matt Wilcox.

ENTRY PERIOD EXTENDED: A few folks reached out to us and said that because of the snowy weather on Thanksgiving weekend, they were unable to get their lights up as they normally do. The weather this weekend is supposed to be more pleasant.

Therefore, we are extending the entry period one week for the Christmas House decorating contest. Entry period will close next Thursday, Dec. 12th and we will release the public viewing list on Friday, Dec. 13th.

• Top three baskets each worth over $200 in gifts from local businesses
• Judges vote Friday, Dec. 13th-Sunday, Dec. 22nd
• Winners announced on FB & website on Monday, Dec. 23rd
• Winners printed in the Wednesday, Jan. 1st paper edition

YMCA Parking Lot Expansion Plans move forward

The Southern Boone area Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) is moving forward with their next phase of expansion, weather-permitting, after receiving recent approval from the City of Ashland.

On Tuesday, Nov. 19th, the board gave the green light for the Y to expand its parking lot on the north and south sides, including 49 news spaces on the north side, two ADA spaces on the north side, 18 spaces on the south side, bus parking, and the addition of a parking lot entrance on the north end from Main Street.

The Journal goes to the Magic Kingdom!

Melanie Jeffery of Hartsburg and daughter Rain Cross brought the Journal along with them to Disney World’s Magic Kingdom and Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida, where they rode roller coasters and attended shows. Rain is a 2018 graduate of Southern Boone High School and a former lifeguard at the Optimist swimming pool.

Thank you to Melanie & Rain for including us in their travels and we hope they had a fabulous time!

Throwin' down for a good cause

Southern Boone is a generous community which takes care of its veterans, and one resident is committed to ensuring everyone has a place to eat on Thanksgiving.

Former Skyline Café owner Brenda Ravenscraft is hosting the 11th annual Thanksgiving dinner at the Southern Boone Middle School to raise donations for a great cause.

From 10am to 2pm on Thanksgiving Day, the public is invited to share a meal of turkey or ham, mashed potatoes, dressing, green beans, cranberry sauce, hot rolls, and pumpkin pie, or grab a plate to go.

The cost is a suggested donation to “Welcome Home: A Community for Veterans” in the way of cash, check or Venmo -Ravenscraft.
