We came across two bull elk yesterday morning as the sun was rising, one being the famous “24” that is often photographed in Mammoth Hot Springs in the fall. He was still being a bit testy, and his compadre here even tried to let out a little late season bugle.

Ever wonder where the fish in Great Smoky Mountains National Park go in the wintertime?

The fish pictured is a brook trout. Brook trout are the only native trout species in the Smokies. They are located in about 133 miles of the park’s streams and are typically found in waters ranging from 45 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

In the wintertime, some of the streams in the park will drop lower than this temperature, especially those at higher elevations. Brook trout will migrate in the winter to warmer waters. They will look for slightly deeper water to keep them insulated but also somewhere near the shore where they can easily find food. Brook Trout can also migrate in the summer if the water becomes too warm for them. However, in the right conditions, brook trout usually do not migrate very far.
