"There's so much mess, sometimes you don't know where to start because there's so much, it's too big, but if you just start, do a little bit at a time, it makes a difference".

That's the core mentality right now in the Swannanoa area more than a month after Helene demolished anything close to the Swannanoa River. In just over 35 days of documenting this disaster, we'd be hard pressed to find a harder hit area in WNC than this pocket when it comes to the sheer number of people affected. Countless people lost their homes, many people lost their lives, loved ones, pets, and the reality of the situation is we're well past the "Hero Honeymoon" phase of a disaster as they call it, and national and international attention on this crisis has dramatically cooled off. But the fact of the matter is with winter approaching, WNC needs your help more than ever.

Wondering how to help? We've got a list of organizations we recommend in the first comment, please visit and consider helping if you can. Reach out to any of those if you can volunteer as well, and they can put you in touch with how you can be used. It takes a village but we're going to get through it one bucket at a time, it just takes getting started.

Stephan here. After a month of documenting this historic, catastrophic, life-changing hurricane, it’s probably past time to talk about how Fiasco Media fared through the flooding...as if the first photo doesn’t give it away.

We moved out of our South Slope studio not even 2 months before the storm hit and were settling into our shared space with Hi-Wire Brewing in the River Arts District (fun how everyone gasps when you say River Arts District now). On the morning of the storm, we were boots on the ground with cameras in hand at 7 am when the flooding was really cranking up, and into the evening, we had drones in the air documenting much of what you’ve seen on the news, social media, etc. Most of it we’ve donated to get awareness out, because at the end of the day, we lost our studio, which isn’t comparable to what we’ve seen out there shooting for news organizations and relief operations with American Red Cross.

We can’t possibly compare losing $35k worth of equipment, hard drives, lighting, editing gear, and personal items to losing a place of living, but it’s our livelihood. We’ve spent thousands on data recovery to save hard drives with irreplaceable galleries and new computers just so we could edit the footage that we’ve got. All to say:

DAMN we are tired and not above asking for a little bit of help. If you have it in your big ol’ hearts to help us out after losing all that and most of our gigs from the busiest month of the year, we sure would appreciate it. Our GoFundMe link is in our bio. Or better yet: share it with your rich friends and tell them that we saved an entire boat of kittens—whatever it takes to keep your favorite video/photo team in Asheville from fleeing the country and starting anew in South America.

The alternative is hiring us, because our team of 5 is taking any and all work we can right now with the equipment we have, which is pretty much all of our shooting equipment minus any studio stuff. We are a full service video/photo/drone production agency and are a multi-Emmy award-winning crew. So yeah...we’re here for whatever you need.

Thanks everyone for what you’re doing to get WNC back on its feet. Fiasco is here if you need us!

“You want a beer? Actually, you know I think you probably need the whole case, just go ahead and take it.”

We didn’t have much to offer Tony other than a case of Miller and to listen. We spent a good part of the day trekking out to the little community of Roaring Creek, an unincorporated corner of Avery County, deep in the hollar, a smidge past Plumtree and a good haul from Burnsville. We’d already set up a Starlink for a cut-off family with medical needs who were tickled to get online and let friends and family know they were okay and dropped supplies from our friends at at local churches and fire departments who knew the locals who needed them most.

To get to the family who needed help, you had to go through Tony’s land. He’s got 35 years worth of construction equipment, tools, dump trucks, everything. As I (Stephan) and fellow Fiasco Media camera op Robb Leahy were leaving, he saw us snapping some shots and yelled “If you want to see something come on inside here.”

Nothing could prepare you for the destruction flooding combined with a mudslide just a few feet away can do to a shop. He showed us the remnants of a lifetime of building. “I lost $500,000 in equipment in the matter of a couple of hours.” The floor was caked with a foot of mud, a grim reminder of what a once-in-1,000-year flood can do to a lifetime of work in such a short period of time.

Despite all that, Tony remained in somewhat good spirits. He told us his story and about how he spent 8 hours driving his trackhoe back to the shop from another site and helped open the roads back up so the community could get back to their houses.

It’s clear that people like Tony — small business owners and longtime natives to the Avery County area (where there are no shortage of fellow Burlesons) — are the backbones of their communities. Nobody has flood insurance, nobody would ever think that a tiny little creek like the one on Roaring Creek (ironically enough) would ever be capable of such levels of destruction. If you want to help Tony get back on track, his GoFundMe is in the comments. In the meantime, you can find him using the equipment he has putting the roads back together in Avery County.

We've posted maybe 1% of what all we've shot since we've been so busy documenting all of this disaster. If you have media friends looking to license B-Roll, A-roll, or fully produced video or photos from the ground or drone, please email me at @fiasco-media.com. After losing the studio and spending our usual busiest month running around constantly shooting we sure could use it right now for recovery efforts! Thanks everyone

Hey folks, I'm organizing an A-TV Team to help with our heli and aircraft efforts to reach areas inaccessible by road or air. We've already got a few involved, so here's what I need from you:

1. ATV, UTV, and skilled drivers.
2. I still need up to date info more than anything on people and communities that haven't been reached. This has by far been the biggest hurdle. Please help me narrow down info on ones that haven't been helped yet.

If you're ready to get out there shoot me an email to [email protected] or dm me here.

The Fiasco team ends on a high note today 📷🎥 it's been swell as hell seein' so many of our friends and industry pals out here, as well as discovering many acts we've never seen before. The backstage hangs have been unstoppable this year, and we're hella proud to be the media production company once again for year two of Asheville's biggest music festival!

If you haven't noticed, we're really involved in the music industry, so taking a trip to Clarksdale, MS—AKA the birthplace of Blues—was essential for Team Fiasco.

Stephan here, and if I could recommend one thing in Clarksdale, it would be the Shack Up Inn. They say it best when they say, "The Ritz we ain't." Guests stay in restored sharecropper shacks on grounds that surround the original cotton gin, which is their bar and lobby.

It's also right in the heart of all the Birthplace of Blues has to offer. You can feel it in your soul, hanging in the damp, think Mississippi air.

Matter of fact, what are we doing sitting here talking about it?? Who's down for a road trip?

07/13/2024

Our hearts are saddened by the news that this is the last year of our friends at Salvage Station occupying the space by the river.

We’ve always had a great time shooting at this Asheville staple for countless fun events, like the Kitchen Dwellers at Blue Ridge Jam.

We’ll miss you and this space dearly. 💔
