After our last post in Swannanoa, we realized that it may have seemed like no cleanup efforts had been made. That is far from the truth. Cleanup is still going in the River Arts portion of Asheville to clear out the mass amount of debris that still stands a few months after the hurricane, but if you haven’t been here in person, you probably can’t understand just why so much of it still hanging around. Hopefully this post can shed a little perspective: The truth is, thousands and thousands of people are still working every day in this. Unless you’ve been here in the thick of it, you cannot fathom the level of destruction that this event caused. Our challenge to you: instead of baselessly arguing politics in the comments, when you feel the urge to argue over who should do what, whose money should have went where, use that energy instead to ask how you can help. @belovedasheville has a great hand in rebuilding and could use the manpower, or if you’re unable to lend a hand in person, we still have a long list of organizations in our bio that are who we recommend donating resources to. According to stats, less than 10% of the debris from Hurricane Helene has even been cleared yet. Less than one mile from my house, the Swannanoa River and its banks are still covered with gnarled steel, buildings, what remains of houses washed far down river. People are still living in RVs, some tents, and some families share homes with others who lost everything in this part of town. In a world where news cycles work in 2-week increments, we ask that you don’t forget about Western North Carolina. We still need eyes on this area to continue to receive vital aid, especially when temps are dropping to around 15 degrees at night. We will get through this, but it’s a marathon, not a sprint. 6 years ago we set out on our first shoot together, after promptly winning an Emmy we thought, well sh*t, maybe we should do this more often? Barnardsville after Hurricane Helene

I took a drive to my hometown of Barnardsville about a month ago, a full month after the storm. Admittedly, I've been avoiding it a bit other than sending supply runs there, just because I knew seeing the places I grew up playing in the Big Ivy and farmland I ran around all over would never look the same again. It's tough reckoning with a landscape that means so much to you that won't ever be the same again, but at the end of the day, all my family made it, and that's what matters most.
