Teen-Beat is an independently owned, operated, and distributed organisation which has been in existence for over 25 years. Teenbeat helped ignite the American indie revolution in the 1980s and 1990s. Known for its DC based indie-guitar-pop and bands such as Unrest, Tuscadero, Versus, and Air Miami. Teen-Beat has also released records by experimentalists Gastr Del Sol, 1960's icons The Feminine Com

plex, +/- {Plus/Minus}, and more recently Fang Wizard, and Cotton Candy. Unrest's Mark Robinson formed Teen-Beat while at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia (just outside Washington DC) with friends Andrew Beaujon (Eggs), Tim Moran (Unrest), Ian Zack (Thirsty Boys), & Phil Krauth (Unrest).

“The Government Administrator” is probably Eggs’ best-known song. Released in 1993 on the Hemiola label in Leeds, England, it got picked up by legendary BBC DJ John Peel, who played the song often when he briefly had a daytime show. That provided Eggs with an entry to the U.K. and Europe, and the song even placed tenth on Peel’s 1993 year-end “Festive Fifty,” sandwiched between the Fall and Palace Brothers. Written by Andrew Beaujon after a botched attempt to please his parents by taking the U.S. State Department’s Foreign Service Officer Test, it’s a humorous, sometimes surreal coming-of-angst tale.

Over the past couple of years, Rob Christiansen has had many of Eggs’ old recording sessions transferred from 2-inch 24 track magnetic tape to digital storage. Sometimes he even has time to listen to them. Earlier this fall, Rob realized that Eggs originally recorded “Government Administrator” with a coda that they left off the single version. The band often played the coda live, but over the ensuing decades memories dimmed, and it was news to everyone that they’d ever recorded it.

Now you can hear the song as originally recorded, alongside two other rarities: “Love With a Tumblin’ O” and “Catch.” The former was recorded by John Morand in Richmond, Virginia in 1995 by Rob and Andrew when they visited Sound of Music studio with an eye toward recording a third Eggs record (which never happened). It was released on a small Canadian label but didn’t feel finished, so over the past few months they overdubbed parts and Rob remixed the song. The latter is a Cure cover that originally appeared on a benefit compilation called Give Me the Cure in 1995 and features Eggs’ last bassist, John Casey. It was recorded at WGNS, the studio owned by long-time Eggs collaborators Geoff Turner and Charles Bennington. We’re pretty sure it’s the last thing the band ever recorded.

To celebrate this release, Teen-Beat will reissue one of the group’s earliest T-shirt designs. It features the slogan “Tuned Mass Damper” on the front — a reference to a lyric in the group’s first single, “Skyscraper” — and a portrait of Eggs muse Astrud Gilberto on the back. You can pre-order the shirts now, and they’ll ship in January. But you can listen to “The Government Administrator” EP right now.

Jonny Cohen
Hamsters for Kerry
A New Short Album

One of the most compelling and interesting voices of our time, Mr. Jonny Cohen, is a lyricist like no other. Teenbeat's very own poet laureate has a unique and enthralling perspective that pulls you in from the very first second of listenting. The title track revisits the touching story of how presidential candidate, John Kerry, rescued the family pet hamster. The other four contributions to the album are equally brilliant and touch on a variety of topics and musical genres.

These five songs were recorded in one day—a cappella—by engineer and producer Mark Robinson. The music was then composed and recorded after the fact, in the following weeks. A pretty unusual way of making a record, but somehow it all came together and works splendidly.

The Hamsters for Kerry short album follows last year's hit album, Clambake Fiasco, which was recorded with his band, The Love Machine. That one is still available on both vinyl LP and CD.

Available on the popular cassette format as well as wirelessly and tapeless via digital streaming.

RIP Justin Chearno. I met Justin when we both were working at the old Olsson's Books and Records in Alexandria, Virginia. He formed the incredible band PITCHBLENDE and was also briefly in UNREST in 1990, played on the "Yes She is My Skinhead Girl" single, and joined us on our very first coast-to-coast tour with DUSTdevils.
