Six individuals were arrested in North Texas on Thursday following a joint operation by ATF Dallas, the Irving Police Department, and the Arlington Police Department targeting the illegal sale of firearm switches via social media. The suspects face federal charges related to the possession and transfer of machine guns, with some also charged with conspiracy to do so.

According to court documents, Marnelius Burks and Royce Weaver allegedly ordered illegal switches from China, while Marco Cabrales advertised and sold the devices on social media. Anthony Joel Cantu is accused of selling both switches and drop-in sears designed to convert semi-automatic fi****ms into fully automatic weapons. During a recorded meeting with an undercover officer, Cantu reportedly confirmed that the devices could indeed make rifles fire fully automatic, saying, “hell yeah, my boy.”

The takedown was part of “Operation Texas Kill Switch,” a statewide initiative launched in June 2024 aimed at targeting machinegun conversion devices, also known as “switches.” These devices enable semi-automatic weapons to have the ability to rapidly fire. If convicted, the suspects face up to 10 years in federal prison. Additionally, two juveniles arrested in the operation are being charged at the state level, due to their ages, we cannot share their identify.

The Bureau of Alcohol, To***co, Fi****ms, and Explosives (ATF), alongside the Irving Police Department, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and local police agencies, led the investigation.

Zacchaeus Selby-Mukum, who survived a shooting at Timberview High School in 2021 when he was 15, was fatally shot Monday evening in Arlington.

Four years after the school shooting, Selby-Mukum was killed in a separate incident, Arlington police confirmed in a news release to sent to APD. Officers responded to reports of gunfire at an apartment complex on Laurelwood Drive around 5:50 p.m. Monday. When they arrived, they found the 19-year-old lying in the parking lot with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a nearby hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Selby-Mukum was one of three people injured during the Timberview High School shooting. Police have stated there is no evidence at this time connecting the two events. “We are following the facts wherever they lead, but currently, we do not believe the shootings are related,” said Arlington Police Department spokesperson Alex Rosado told local media.

The 2021 school shooting resulted in the conviction of Timothy Simpkins, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison for attempted capital murder, along with two additional years for carrying a firearm in a restricted area.

Mansfield Independent School District, which oversees Timberview High, expressed condolences in a statement to families, saying, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of former student Zacchaeus Selby. Counselors are available to support students and staff affected by this tragedy.”

Arlington police have not made any arrests or identified suspects in Monday’s shooting. Witnesses reported hearing an argument moments before the gunfire. Investigators are working to determine Selby-Mukum’s actions leading up to the shooting and whether high-risk activities were involved. “We’re still piecing together what happened and why,” Rosado said.

The body discovered in Lake Arlington on January 3 has now been identified as 21-year-old FedEx employee Marquise Browner, who had been missing since December 18, 2024, his family confirmed to WFAA.

Browner was last seen on December 18 when his mother, Elanor Holiday, dropped him off at a FedEx facility in Fort Worth. Concerns grew the following day when his supervisor informed Holiday that Browner never clocked in for his scheduled shift. A search of his room revealed his work ID was still at home, raising further alarm.

The Fort Worth Police Department searched local hospitals, jails, and morgues but found no evidence of Browner’s whereabouts. Meanwhile, Holiday’s personal investigation revealed activity on her son’s bank card on December 19, showing it had been used at a Whataburger in Fort Worth and a nearby gas station.

On January 3, Arlington police responded to reports of a body washed ashore near the 4100 block of Surfside Court by Lake Arlington. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner later identified the remains as Browner’s.

Authorities stated that Browner’s body showed no signs of trauma and that he appeared to have been in the water for an extended period.

The information provided was initially reported by WFAA’s Zachary Yanes & Scoop Jefferson.

FBI investigation into the New Year’s Day truck attack in New Orleans, which claimed 14 lives, has revealed that one of the weapons involved was purchased in Arlington, Texas.

According to WFAA, FBI officials say that the suspect, 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, legally obtained the semiautomatic rifle used in the attack through a private sale transaction in November 2024. The individual who sold the gun to Jabbar did not know him and had no awareness that the weapon would be used in an attack, according to the FBI.

Arlington PD is not currently investigating any crimes related to the attack. As a precaution, the City of Arlington has implemented enhanced security measures for the Dallas Cowboys season finale and will take similar steps for the upcoming Cotton Bowl Classic, scheduled for January 10 at AT&T Stadium.

Police officials report there are no known threats to the game at this time but insist that the department is continuously monitoring for potential risks and remains fully prepared to respond swiftly if necessary.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces conducted dozens of precision airstrikes targeting known IS*S camps and operatives in central Syria two days ago.

According to a statement released by CENTCOM, the strikes were part of an ongoing operation aimed at disrupting, degrading, and defeating IS*S to prevent the group from conducting external operations and to ensure it cannot exploit the current collapse of the Syrian government.

The operation targeted over 75 sites using multiple U.S. Air Force assets, including B-52 bombers, F-15 fighters, and A-10 aircraft, CENTCOM reported.

As of now are no reports or indications of civilian casualties as battle damage assessments is ongoing.

“There should be no doubt—we will not allow IS*S to reconstitute and take advantage of the current situation in Syria,” said General Michael Erik Kurilla, Commander of U.S. Central Command. “All organizations in Syria should know that we will hold them accountable if they partner with or support IS*S in any way.”

CENTCOM emphasized that it will continue operations to weaken the group’s operational capabilities, even amidst the ongoing political instability in Syria.

Three Arlington ISD teachers are under investigation for alleged certification fraud involving proxy test-takers. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) is investigating a statewide cheating scheme where officials believe at the minimum at least 200 teachers across the State of Texas, many being from the Houston and Arlington/Dallas-Fort Worth area falsely certified to become educators in the state.

Arlington ISD placed the individuals on leave and is cooperating with authorities. This growing investigation highlights serious concerns about teacher credentialing practices.

Arlington Police Department are expanding license plate reading cameras throughout the city, insisting that the technology is driving down crime and contributing to high-profile arrests.

According to NBC-DFW, the City of Arlington recently agreed to renew its most recent contract with Flock Safety, continuing the program which includes a current network of more than 130 cameras around the city. The program first began two years ago with just 24 cameras.

Police say their latest data shows that since starting the program, parts of Arlington with Flock cameras have seen a 26% drop in crimes against persons, compared to a 12% drop in crimes in other areas.

Opponents of the program have raised concerns about the privacy of residents who live near the cameras being compromised, specifically regarding who is watching the footage, how it is being used, and how long it is stored.

Arlington PD officials say that the cameras only capture license plates on the rear of vehicles and do not record drivers or passengers. They also say that footage is only stored for 30 days, and officers can only access the Flock system after undergoing training and if they are investigating a specific case.

A controversial bill was recently filed in the Texas Legislature, seeking to enhance school security in Texas by deploying armed drones at campuses.

The bill, filed by State Rep. Ryan Guillen, proposes giving school districts drones armed with “less lethal” capabilities like pepper spray as an alternative to armed security guards. The measure comes as many schools reportedly struggle to comply with a previous mandate requiring armed guards on every campus following the Uvalde school shooting.

The proposed legislation also seeks to address a funding gap for school safety, increasing the state’s safety funding from $10 to $100 per student and permitting districts to allocate the money for security upgrades, including deploying drones, if passed. This funding would be expected to help schools comply with the requirement to have either an officer or a drone for every 200 students.

Proponents argue that drones could serve as a cost-effective alternative to hiring armed guards, which many districts reportedly cannot afford. Critics have raised concerns about the effectiveness of the approach, citing potential risks such as hacking and friendly fire. The Texas State Teachers Association described the proposal as “ridiculous.”

The bill is expected to be taken up during the legislative session that begins next month.

What do you think? Are armed drones at schools a good idea? 🤔🗣️

The Arlington Police Department (APD) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of 34-year-old Edgar Ayala Garcia, who was wielding a knife during an altercation at a local motel.

According to an APD press release, the incident occurred early last Wednesday morning after officers responded to reports of a disturbance at the motel and found Garcia in an altercation with another man in a room. The man had apparent cuts on his arm, while Garcia was holding a knife.

Officers reportedly gave multiple commands for Garcia to drop the weapon, but he allegedly refused and continued fighting. Both officers discharged their fi****ms, striking Garcia. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Police say the altercation began after Garcia knocked on multiple motel doors. The man opened the door, leading to the confrontation.

Per department policy, both officers involved have been placed on administrative leave while the incident is under investigation.

A Tarrant County jury awarded 54-year-old Abel Rodriguez over $60 million in damages last week, concluding a six-year legal battle over an incident in which he was severely injured by a security guard at a Texas Live! bar.

According to Star-Telegram, the incident occurred in September 2018 after a minor dispute over a souvenir glass. The lawsuit asserts that the security guard shoved Rodriguez, a military veteran and former police officer, to the ground and smashed a glass beer mug on his head. The injury required layers of stitches to sew the wound up, as asserted by attorneys.

The lawsuit reportedly revealed that the security guard was improperly hired, citing a felony battery conviction five years prior. Texas law mandates that a person with a felony conviction within the last 10 years is not allowed to work as a security guard.

Attorneys also accused Texas Live! and its contractor of attempting to cover up video evidence and using Rodriguez’s PTSD from his time in the military to downplay his injuries. Texas Live! reportedly denied liability, calling the event an isolated incident involving a third-party contractor, and stated it plans to appeal the verdict.

The total judgment amount of $60,650,000 includes exemplary damages of $50 million against Texas Live!, $5 million against Inner Parish Security Corporation and $500,000 against the security guard, according to court documents.

Starting Jan. 1, 2025, Texans will no longer be required to get their vehicles inspected to receive their registration tags.

The change is part of a new law Gov. Greg Abbott signed last year that abolished the Vehicle Safety Inspection Program for non-commercial vehicles.

Despite the change, certain counties will still require an annual visit for non-commercial vehicles to pass an emissions test before being issued registration, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Counties in and around major Texas cities including Austin, Arlington-DFW, El Paso and Houston will be part of the mandatory emissions tests.

All non-commercial vehicles will also be subject to a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee. This fee will be added to your total when you register your vehicle with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles.
