Joys of the Table
An Anthology of Culinary Verse
Created and Edited by Sally Zakariya

The joys of the table belong equally to all ages, conditions, countries and times; they mix with all other pleasures,  and remain the last to console us for their loss.—Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin

First produced in 423 BC at the City Dionysia theater festival, Aristophanes’ Clouds is often considered one of the world’s first comedies of ideas—a sort of “Saturday Night Live” political satire.

It is interesting to think of Aristophanes as being as much a reporter or opinion writer as a dramatist, because of his ability to freely communicate his political opinions in the play.

This month we will be highlighting some of the work of Canadian poet Kevin Taylor. Kevin's poetry has been praised by tens of thousands of online readers and we want to share of his work with you. Before we post a poem, however, we thought we would share a few of his insights into art and art forms. Here is a quote of Kevin's from his book of poetry, Between Music and Dance.

Where language approaches rhythm we have music.
Where rhythm approaches form we have dance.
Where form approaches language we have sculpture.
Song lies between music and dance.
Poet-ch’i, Kevin Taylor

You can read more about Kevin and his poetry on our website.

1500 years before Homer and earlier even than Gilgamesh lived the first writer and poet whose name we know, Enheduanna...

Certainly we have writings older than the 23rd century BCE, however, the specific authorship of these writings are unknown to us.  Enter Enheduanna, the High Priestess of the goddess Inanna and the moon god Nanna in  the ancient city of Ur in southern Mesopotamia. Her writings include devotions to...

The People Poems

I decided to gather some of my “people poems” together as a chapbook and shop the manuscript around. The result, The Unknowable Mystery of Other People, was a finalist in the 2018 Poetry Box chapbook contest and is available until February 20 at a pre-release discount price of $10. Here’s one of the poems:

Requiem for a Nobody
By Sally Zakariya

Unknown, unsung, no obituary
to spell out the bare facts of his life,
just one of the many to perish alone
on the street, hand still outstretched
for help that would not come. ... more http://www.butdoesitrhyme.com/

When the Future Meets the Past

The Lycurgus Cup is a glass chalice dating to 4th century Rome made of dichroic glass (glass which shows different colors when viewed from different directions.) It appears red when lit from behind, but green when lit from the front. The cup....

Upon education, our future depends, the future of our planet, our race, our very generations. Man is endowed with tremendous mental and spiritual gifts. It is up to man, therefore, to ensure that these gifts are used wisely and are not squandered in ignorance of what man has achieved, and more importantly, of what man is capable of achieving. Every moment of life is a learning opportunity; every person and experience a potential teacher. Education is not merely a means for earning a living or an instrument for the acquisition of wealth. It is an initiation into life of spirit, a training of the human soul in the pursuit of truth and the practice of virtue."

Here’s the opening of one poem from the collection, “The Politics of Love and The Politics of Blood,” by Tria Blu Wakpa, a poet of Filipina, European, and Native American ancestries:

Kamama, a Cherokee word,
meaning both butterfly and elephant.
Once a Russian writer said to me,
There are so many bloods
running inside you....
