Cedar Waxwings and American Robins stripped the berries from native American holly trees (right image) and ignored berries on non native holly species (left) in the same garden. Berries that look identical to us are perceived differently by birds.

Silver terminalia by the late Veronica Roodt a wildlife guide, author and artist who lived alone and mostly under canvas in the Moremi Game Park, Botswana, for 34 years. My tribute to her remarkable life will be posted soon in my blog at https://rogergosden.com

This is an entrance to a game preserve in Botswana where there are no fences and game can go anywhere. One night in a rainstorm the warden noticed the door to the public toilet was left open (there’s a notice on the door). He closed it before going home. The first visitor next morning opened the door. A leopard flew out of the loo over his shoulders to disappear in the bush. I carefully check the stalls now before entering.

Disciplined meditation doesn’t come naturally to me but it helps to sit with pets. They are my tutors who always live in the moment, except the hour before dinner time.

If you post a public notice of your birth date on social media don’t expect every message wishes you another healthy year. Today is my birthday. Among other greetings, I received a card from a local funeral home inviting me to register. We fell over laughing, but perhaps it wasn’t meant to be funny!

There is an anonymous woman in town who is leaving bunches of smooth pebbles in stores for customers to take if they like. They all have a painted heart like this one Lucinda brought home. I have a theory about her mission but what do you think?

It’s wildlife rescue week. First uncoiling a snake around a squealing baby rabbit. Then a Black Vulture with a damaged wing strutted past our porch. I lured it into a dog crate for a licensed rehabber to transfer to a wildlife care facility. Vultures are a protected species under the Migratory Birds Act.

Cicadas can’t swim. Rescued from the pool a weird, cigar-shaped insect more often heard than seen. This is an annual species, not the 13/17 year periodic kind.

Bumblebees are like gentle, fuzzy bears with a sweet tooth (tongue)

Old times never completely faded away; they are hidden until taking us by surprise. This off the beaten track store in Highland County, Va, took me back. See the antique cash register, pot-belly stove, shelves full of bottles of herbal lineaments. and display of local products. I bought maple syrup from the old Mennonite woman in a blue smock and long grey hair gathered under a small white cap. I left the store over 100 years later. #maplesyrup #mennonites

Lawns converted to 50% white clover are feeding wild bees and honeybees. Clover salad attracts bunnies away from flower borders. #clovers

After a hard day, return to joy by running with retrievers. #goldenretrieversofinstagram

Other visitors captured by a gamecam in a Virginia garden include raccoons, oppossums, cottontail rabbits, groundhogs and red fox.

This weekend we had a King Tide. The highest astronomical tide of the year is monitored by citizen scientists to help predict flooding in future. On a King Tide we can paddle far into Virginia swamps inaccessible any other time. #kingtides

Fall season is a work of art in music as well as color.

Latest episode at dusk same day (happening as I write). Racoon scares young bear from his heap of corn before he finds his courage and makes the bandit skedaddle. #blackbear

This guy hung around for 90 min while I had breakfast in slow motion this side of the rail. So slow that a chipmunk almost ran over my feet on the deck and a rabbit didn’t notice me. As I record this I wonder if the young bear will join me on the deck. Last visit when I was away he left muddy paw prints here and mud on my chair. Perhaps he likes the view as much as much as I do. #blackbear

Twenty feet from our front door in WV two dandy gobblers are chasing a wild turkey hen whose having neither of them. The snow disappeared today. #wildturkey
