This thing is a beast! Clipping plugins have become popular in modern music, being used in place of limiters. Pro mixing and mastering engineers use clippers to maximize the volume of their tracks, without killing the dynamics. Instead of gain reduction, clippers allow the signal to maintain its full volume, while strategically clipping the peaks of the signal. This results in a more natural compressed sound, with some edge and harmonics added in, and more output so that your mastering compressor doesn't have to work as hard. The Virtual Tape Machines plugin is amazing at giving you that warm, analog character. It works amazingly on vocals, guitars, even bass! If you're looking for a way to warm up things that feel a tad bright or too "poppy", this thing will help smooth and round it out. Pushing harder into the tape machines provides some natural compression and overdrive, so sometimes you don't need to put a compressor before or after it. The added harmonics from the analog circuitry makes your tracks sound fuller, and there are several different modes to choose from! iZotope RX De-Clip
This plugin from is an amazing tool for engineers who work in post audio handling dialogue, but is also very useful for musical tracks! It's easily one of the best clipping/distortion cleanup tools out there, and delivers stellar results. I used it on a recorded vocal that was clipping quite a bit during a live performance. It handled very well! Use this in small amounts, because too much can cause lots of artifacts.

This plugin is modeled after the famous 1176 compressor, used on tons of recordings throughout history. It's most known for its classic analog warmth and harmonic character, and it's versatility on things like vocals, guitars, drums, and more!

It has two modes: blue and black. Each one compresses differently and has a different character to it. I encourage you to try it out for yourself and see how they each respond! Generally, the black is faster, and the blue is slower.

The Clarity Vx. This is an amazing tool to clean up dialogue that has some messy background noise. It uses Waves Neural Network to intelligently distinguish main dialogue from background noise. I've used it on several of my own videos, and the amount of detail retained in the main dialogue, paired with the background noise removal is just astounding. Go to waves.com and buy it now!
