Herb Swearengine (RIP) and I wrote this software in about 2004. I sold it as EzDJPro, and he sold it as Virtual DJ.

It had time announcements, temperature announcements, a music scheduler, RDS tagging, and could run a radio station in automation or live assist 24/7.

The market was so saturated with FREE software at that time, that it gained little attention. We sold maybe 24 copies of it. It did gain me a 15-year contract for Unattended Weather for Scott Studios LLC and XM Satellite. Cory Smith bought Unattended Weather from Dave Scott and still supports it.

TWiRT 644 - Broadcast Computer Automation with Alan Freeman

We've ALL used broadcast automation/playout systems, but have you met the BRAINS behind their designs and software? Today we're meeting Alan Freeman, author of several Radio and TV automation systems including Digital DJ, AXS, EZ DJ Pro, Virtual Cart Machine, and Voice Tracking on Scott Studios automation systems. Plus, Alan helped design audio and relay cards for PCs, making integration possible between these PC-based audio systems and the hardware of the day. From controlling satellite-delivered music formats to mega-CD changers, to music on hard drives, Alan has written software and user interfaces for them.

It's called RadioConverter. It's an audio tool that converts any audio files used by one digital automation system to work with another automation system.

RadioConverter can convert MP3 to WAV/PCM, CART to SCOT, SCOT to CART, BSI, Rivendell, Audio Vault,, Wide Orbit, etc. The meta data is moved from the source file to the destination file in the format required by various automation.

You just set the source folder, the destination folder and what format you want to convert to. The software will read the entire folder and make the conversions, stamping the correct CHUNK or META DATA on the converted file.

We've got it pretty much done. We've been adding on a few more broadcast automation companies meta-data chunks that have been promised to us.

Screenshots of my latest creation and our new product AirSyncFTP. It pulls audio cuts from radio audio content providers FTP sites and converts (ingest) them to the format you need for your radio station automation system. Due to be released the 3rd week of March 2021. AirSynFTP uses these meta-data chunks: CART, W/O SCOT, NEXGEN, RDS, and BSI (LIST/INFO/DISPLAY. It supports PUSHING or uploading files to the FTP as well. Tell us your needs and we'll attempt to accommodate them!

We're working on an update to Wintrax, v1.60. It will encompass a few bug fixes for Grid adnormalies, but it will also add support for the 'Global Cache' Ethernet/IP controlled IR device. This will do two things. 1). It will allow changers to be somewhere else in the building than where the controlling PC is and 2). It will allow us to sell Wintrax again, since we have discontinued our controller. For newbies this means: if you have or can find some Pioneer or Sony mega-changers, you'll be able to automate them and use your CDs again!

I don't mean to brag, but in 1989 I wrote the first PC based digital automation software called Digital DJ. It replaced a room full of refrigerator size automation devices and inspired companies to make high quality sound cards. By 1992, we had 14 competitors. We were all broadcast people who were looking for solutions. Now those companies, including the ones I had the pleasure to work with, have been swallowed up by companies who just want to make quick $$$ on advertising insertions... after all, radio and TV are based on content that will sell products. It's all about the ad dollars. I'm not knocking that, but just felt a moment of truth is good for the soul.
