The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa, has introduced several new administrative measures in the Budget Transmittal to the office of the President to improve the budget process.

These measures are designed to enhance transparency and accountability within the Government's budgetary process.

Among the new directives, the Speaker has mandated that all future budget transmittals to the President must be accompanied by a transmittal cover, signed by the Honorable Speaker himself.

Additionally, the office of the Chief Clerk has been ordered to implement a record-keeping system to track all documents, including information on who checks them in and out.

Further, the Speaker has called for restrictions on document retrieval by the records custodian in the Chief Clerk's office.

The Speaker has instructed the Rules, Order, and Administration Committee to provide additional facilities for the Chief Clerk's office to improve efficiency.

These measures, according to a release by the Press & Public Affairs Department, aimed at tightening controls and preserve the integrity of the budget process.

In order to make the budget process more efficient the House of Representatives has also established two subcommittees under the Ways, Means, Finance, and Development Planning Committee. The Subcommittee on Revenue is chaired by Rep. Dorwohn T. Gleekia, while the Subcommittee on Expenditure is chaired by Rep. P. Mike Jury

President Boakai Calls for GVL Expansion and Palm Oil Refinery Company to Create Jobs, While Indonesian President Widodo Invites Liberia to Join Palm Oil Council!!

Bali, Indonesia - September 2, 2024
President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. has called for a significant expansion of Golden Veroleum Limited (GVL), an Indonesian palm oil company operating in Liberia, during high-level bilateral talks with Indonesian President Joko Widodo at the 2nd Indonesia-Africa Forum.

In his address, President Boakai advocated for the establishment of a palm oil refinery in Liberia, highlighting its potential to boost value addition within the country's palm oil sector and generate substantial employment opportunities for Liberians.

President Boakai emphasized that while GVL’s contributions to Liberia’s agricultural sector have been valuable, establishing a local refinery would significantly enhance the economic benefits derived from the palm oil industry.

This initiative is expected to create numerous jobs, which is crucial for addressing Liberia’s employment challenges and fostering economic growth.

The refinery would enable Liberia to process palm oil domestically, reducing reliance on imports and increasing the sector's profitability.

According to Executive Mansion Press, during the discussions, President Boakai expressed gratitude for Indonesia’s historical support, including its role in Liberia’s peacekeeping efforts and investments in various sectors.

He urged continued Indonesian support to address the challenges faced by Indonesian companies in Liberia, particularly those operating in the palm oil industry.

In addition to the refinery proposal, President Boakai suggested several measures to strengthen bilateral relations, such as the exchange of Resident Ambassadors and the revitalization of the Joint Commission established in 2013.

He also extended a formal invitation to President Widodo to visit Liberia, aiming to further cement the partnership and explore new avenues for collaboration.

Responding to President Boakai’s call, President Widodo showed strong support for increasing Indonesian investment in Liberia.

He proposed enhancing cooperation in key areas including infrastructure development, capacity building, and technical support.

President Widodo also invited Liberia to join the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOC) and participate in the South-South Tropical Forest Collaboration, recognizing Liberia’s extensive forest resources as a valuable asset.

Both leaders expressed optimism about the future of their partnership, focusing on creating economic opportunities, improving livelihoods, and supporting sustainable development in both nations.

Liberia Confirms First Mpox Case: A Public Health Alert

In a significant development, Liberia has confirmed its first case of Mpox, marking a critical moment for the nation as it faces this emerging global health threat. Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan, Director-General of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL),
September 2, 2024
Addressed the press, the case involves a
seven-year-old girl from Jeadepo, Dodrukon, in Sinoe County. This case is the first since the World alth Organization (WHO) declared Mpox a public health emergency of international concern on August 14, 2024.

The case has prompted the activation of the Incident Management System (IMS), the specialized body responsible for mobilizing resources and coordinating the nation's response to public health emergencies. Dr. Nyan assured the public that NPHIL is working closely with local and international health partners to contain the outbreak and prevent further transmission.

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral zoonotic disease that has gained global attention due to its rapid spread in recent months. The disease is characterized by symptoms such as fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes, and can lead to severe complications, especially in children and immunocompromised individuals. The WHO's declaration, followed by a similar recognition from the African Center for Disease Control (Africa CDC), underscores the urgency of coordinated efforts to combat the virus.

In speaking, the confirmation of the case NPHIL has intensified its surveillance efforts, particularly in Sinoe County, where the affected child resides. The IMS, now fully operational, is tasked with overseeing the deployment of healthcare workers, the establishment of isolation centers, and the dissemination of public health information.

Dr. Nyan emphasized the importance of public cooperation in adhering to health guidelines to prevent the spread of Mpox. "The safety of our communities depends on our collective efforts to follow the recommended public health measures," he said.

The Communication Division of NPHIL will be providing regular updates as more information becomes available. Meanwhile, the public is urged to remain vigilant and to seek immediate medical attention if they experience any symptoms associated with Mpox.

In light of the confirmed case, NPHIL has issued the following advisory to the public:

- Practice Good Hygiene: Regular handwashing with soap and water, and the use of hand sanitizers can reduce the risk of transmission.
- Avoid Contact: Limit close contact with people showing symptoms of Mpox, including those with a visible rash.
- Report Symptoms: Individuals experiencing fever, rash, or swollen lymph nodes should seek medical care immediately.
- Stay Informed: Follow updates from NPHIL and other health authorities to stay informed about the latest developments.

As Liberia confronts this new public health challenge, the combined efforts of government authorities, healthcare professionals, and the public will be crucial in controlling the spread of Mpox and safeguarding the health of the nation.
