DISCLAIMER: It should be noted that in the original post for this article posted on May 3, several students' faces were included. Those students' portraits were a part of the artwork on which the "Free Palestine" stickers were later added. Those students were not the ones who added the stickers to the art.

This past Monday, Lower Merion held its first official “Wellness Day,” in honor of the one year anniversary of Mr. Hughes’ passing.

Understanding that the anniversary would bring about many emotional feelings for LM staff and students, Student Council decided to implement a day for the well-being of all of LM. The Wellness Day not only gave students an opportunity to “reflect on Hughes’ impact,” but it also ensured that students wouldn’t experience any added on stressors from school.

Teachers swapped lesson plans for board games and movies, and clubs opened their doors to host activities for the students. From meditation sessions to kayaking lessons in the pool, there was an abundance of activities for students to choose from. LM’s first “Wellness Day" has come and gone, but it surely won’t be the last.

This year, the new Black Rock Middle School has been a point of discussion in the Lower Merion community, with its unique structure/concept making headlines. Principal Sarah Stout explained that, in designing the school, the administrators and architects aimed to make the building more “developmentally appropriate with what the kids need.”

The school’s unique outlook on their classroom structure is the main subject of attention. Revolving entirely around students, the approach to learning at Black Rock is “unlike anything our district has seen.” Middle school students from the district were consulted throughout the process, ensuring that the school’s design was truly beneficial for those attending.

The Merionite spoke with students, teachers, and administrators from the school district who shared their  opinions about the new school.

Students were welcomed into the Kobe Bryant Gymnasium this Wednesday by over 80 clubs during the short hour of Lunch and Learn.

Each year, the activities fair allows student-run clubs to advertise and recruit new members. The abundance of clubs has prompted Student Council to resort to splitting tables between the clubs so that they can accommodate each one. Although this makes it harder for the clubs to grow their recruitment, they still see high numbers of new members, many of which were enticed by the candy and stickers thrown at them. The clubs covered almost every interest a Lower Merion student could have, ranging from political and sports clubs to performing arts and community service.

Although the immense number of clubs can be overwhelming, the activities fair, giving students the ability to learn about the endless opportunities at LM, typically has tremendously positive feedback. Being able to get involved at school in so many ways is hugely beneficial to the students of LM, who are given the possibility of pursuing their passions through the school.
