Political scientist Juliane Troicki spent much of her career in academia researching how political parties successfully engage with their voter bases.

The native of Germany is now applying her findings to the corporate world to help employers crack the ever‑elusive code of talent attraction and retention through engagement.

It all comes down to recognition and appreciation. Troicki helps employers accomplish this through the Illuminating Project, which creates custom employee engagement opportunities through writing and photography.

“People want to know not just that they matter, but that their work is seen and their work has an impact,” she says.

High school friends Joe Maretti, Kyle Herzog and Scott Biely had just finished up a round of golf at Thornberry Creek in Oneida in July 2020, taking advantage of the pandemic-friendly outdoor social opportunity. Someone walked in wearing a “Wisconsin” hat, and they wondered why there was no golf apparel that featured the state. They decided to launch the apparel business Old Fashioned Golf to change that.

“None of us have apparel backgrounds, none of us have business startup backgrounds, none of us have small business backgrounds, but we just went from there,” Herzog says. “It was July 2020 and we had a lot of time on our hands. We never found a reason to stop.”

The Northeast Wisconsin Chinese Association (NEWCA) was founded as a social club more than four decades ago by a pair of Lawrence University professors from Taiwan. The group disbanded during the pandemic, but in 2021 President Fanni Xie was inspired to bring the organization back as a 501(c)3 with a new scope and primary mission: promoting diversity and cultural understanding.

A lot of NEWCA’s work under Xie’s leadership has come in the form of presentations and performances at schools, libraries and cultural festivals, but its signature event is the Northeast Wisconsin Dragon Boat Festival, which is scheduled this year for Sept. 14 at Leach Amphitheater in Oshkosh.
