Joe Walsh is a quintessential musician, still carving an indelible mark in the modern history of Rock & Roll. From the late 1960’s James Gang years, to Barnstorm, Eagles, a successful solo career, countless collaborations and co-writes, and to now, giving back, at his ongoing annual series of concerts called ‘VetsAid’. DeeperCuts celebrates Mr. Joseph Fidler Walsh. Joe wrote or co-wrote 10 of the 13 songs on the playlist, and it was a happy challenge to choose music made by an Icon with a catalogue that spans seven decades. Ani DiFranco introduced herself in 1990, after forming her own record label, Righteous Babe, the prior year at age 19.

DeeperCuts occasionally ventures out of the ‘comfort zone’ of familiar artists and genres.
From the mid 1980’s through the mid 1990’s, a tag was placed on an unrefined, angst filled, introspective fusion of no less than seven music forms, predominantly punk and heavy metal. The new genre was dubbed ‘Grunge’.
Originating primarily in the Seattle area, the music that was created spawned, and sustained a genuine cultural phenomenon.
Researching material for the program was a revelation, and, although the playlist features artists that crossed into the ‘mainstream’, you will still be treated to some great music not often heard.

I am not sure if this makes sense, but from my limited research about Kenny Edwards, the conclusion is that his legacy can be categorised as “quietly legendary”.
A founding member of The Stone Poneys in 1965, he and Robby Kimmel wrote much of the early material that launched Linda Ronstadt’s stratospheric career in Rock and Roll, and beyond. Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, session musician, and record producer, Kenny did it all across a steady 45 year run in the business. Kenny Edwards is directly connected to every song on today’s playlist, and I hope you enjoy the selections here on DeeperCuts 🤓

The incomparable Bettye LaVette is our featured artist on DeeperCuts today. In 1962, at age 16, Bettye recorded an R&B top ten hit. For the remainder of the 1960’s she was on the very edge of stardom, and in 1972, Bettye recorded her first full length record, only to see it shelved by the record company. Survivor that she is, Bettye continued working, singing in lounges and clubs for a couple decades, before finally securing a firm record deal in 2003.
She is a self proclaimed ‘song interpreter’,
which explains that the bulk of her work is singing covers of songs.

I clearly remember driving around town, grumbling about the music on the radio, and/or griping about the DJ’s, for no good reason. Then, in January of 2017, Kismet came knocking. I was offered, and accepted, an internship as a shift Jock at Anchorage’s KNBA, eventually presenting an idea for a show. DeeperCuts debuted on June 9, 2018, and it’s been an amazing ride, complete with twists and turns along the way. First and foremost, it’s been the thrill of music discovery and the ability to share with the awesome folks who listen to DeeperCuts.
The playlist spans seven decades of music, reflecting an eclectic music palette.

The extraordinary multi instrumentalist Greg Leisz is our featured artist today on DeeperCuts. Cutting his musical teeth in the California garage band era of the latter half of the 1960’s, Greg soon mastered the guitar forms of pedal steel and lap steel. His fluency in mandolin, electric and acoustic guitar, dobro, dulcimer, Weissenborn lap slide guitar, mando guitar, slide guitar, piano, and banjo, make Greg Leisz a go-to musician in a wide array of music genres. Additionally, he is a songwriter and record producer.

The seminal rock band Cream is the featured group on today’s edition of DeeperCuts. The power trio of Ginger Baker (drums) Eric Clapton (guitar) and Jack Bruce (bass) were all well known musicians before joining forces in 1966. Considered the first rock supergroup, Cream’s music still resonates almost 60 years later, as evidenced by three covers from the 2020’s. The songs on our playlist today were written, or co-written by the members of Cream, with the exception of ‘Spoonful’ (Willie Dixon) ‘Well All Right’ (Buddy Holly) and ‘Let Me Ride’ (Roebuck ‘Pops’ Staples).
