Last week we celebrated Indigenous Peoples Day with our Indigenous Business Resource Group (IBRG). We were honored to welcome Cupik and Yupik dance group Cupiit Yurartet who shared songs and dances passed down through generations, offering a powerful glimpse into living traditions. Witty Youngman also took the stage, blending traditional elements with modern sounds, showing how these cultural roots continue to grow and evolve.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the IBRG for organizing this meaningful event. Events like this are essential to IBRG’s mission of creating space for reflection and fostering appreciation for the Indigenous communities who have called this land home for thousands of years.

At the Alaska Oil and Gas Association, staying connected is essential to advancing Alaska’s oil and gas industry and GCI has been their trusted partner for years.

“We’ve been using GCI as our internet provider for as long as I can remember at AOGA,” said Kara Moriarty, president and CEO of AOGA. “No business in Alaska, including ours, could function without fast, reliable, and consistent internet.” From managing internal communications to engaging with the public, GCI’s services are critical to AOGA’s operations. “GCI powers everything we do — from communicating with our board and committees to advocacy work,” Moriarty said. “GCI has been a very dependable partner for us. Without the internet, we simply don’t function.”

But GCI’s support doesn’t stop at the office. Each year, AOGA hosts a major conference, gathering more than 500 industry professionals, government leaders, and stakeholders. For the past eight years, GCI has been instrumental in powering the event, offering a charging station for attendees. More recently, GCI partnered to create a mobile app specifically for the conference. “The app is crucial,” Moriarty said. “It has the agenda, speaker bios, and even allows attendees to submit questions during panel discussions. It helps us reduce waste by eliminating printed programs. It’s just another way technology is improving the quality of our conference.”

From powering AOGA’s office to enhancing their signature events, GCI’s reliable, high-speed internet and mobile services have been vital to the organization’s success. Read more at ➡️ https://bit.ly/4h3KI9j.

"I grew up in Unalakleet, and GCI is all I’ve ever known for staying connected —whether it was our home phone, internet or cell service. Now, working here feels like a full-circle moment. GCI was my first real job, and nine years later, I’m still here. I wear those nine years like a badge of honor.

Throughout my time here, I’ve worked in different retail locations, but it’s the people who motivate me. As I always say, the driving force for me to get up and go to work is the people I work with. My team feels like family, especially Lorie, my longtime mentor. She’s been by my side since day one, and her support is a huge part of my journey.

There are hard days but I believe the people who are most successful are the ones who put their nose to the grindstone and face adversity head-on. That determination pushes me forward.

One of my biggest sources of pride is getting to help my people. As an Alaska Native, I stay connected to my roots by helping others stay connected. GCI has set the bar high when it comes to bridging the digital divide, and I love being part of that mission.

Looking ahead, I’m excited to grow into management, to take what I’ve learned and help others along the way.”

Deion is a wildly ingenious Senior Customer Service Sales Specialist at GCI, proudly serving customers for the past nine years. Outside of work, he enjoys traveling with his wife and newborn son to Lakers basketball games, or gaming with friends.

“My family is from Utqiagvik and Fremont, California, which means I grew up in two vastly different hometowns. I have always been connected to Alaska which is why I chose to permanently move here when I was 16. Since joining GCI in March of 2021, I’ve had many opportunities for growth and I’m excited to continue my journey here.

A particularly meaningful experience at GCI has been helping to launch the Indigenous Business Resource Group. I started as the interim co-chair and later became the chair. Last year, we held our first in-person Indigenous Peoples Day event, which was also GCI’s first company-wide event of its kind. We had dancers, great food, and it was a huge success. The Indigenous Business Resource Group has been a way for me to celebrate my culture with others and help people learn more about Alaska’s Indigenous communities. That’s important to me because Alaska has one of the highest Indigenous populations in the country, and GCI operates on lands that belong to many Native peoples. I don’t live on my homeland of Utqiagvik, but I want people to respect the land and understand its significance. Through the Indigenous Business Resource Group, we educate employees, helping them understand how they can support and respect Indigenous peoples and their lands.

My job is all about connecting supply and demand, so it’s rewarding to know that what we do helps keep Alaska connected, especially in rural areas like Utqiagvik. Knowing my work helps close the connectivity gap so my younger family members and other kids in rural Alaska can access better education and opportunities is something I’m proud of.”

Sarah is a Senior Demand Planner at GCI and a past chair of the Indigenous Business Resource Group. Outside of work, she enjoys reading (she’s hit her goal of reading 200 books this year!), bowling with her husband, camping, and spending time with her beloved malamute Fenris who proudly wears a GCI bandana!

We proudly support the Indigenous Peoples of Alaska, honoring their contributions, history, and their stewardship of this land. One way we do this is with our Indigenous Business Resource Group (IBRG), a space where both Indigenous employees and allies come together to celebrate, educate, and share the deep-rooted traditions that make Alaska so unique. Whether it's through hosting traditional food tastings, sharing personal stories, or hosting cultural workshops and events, the IBRG helps us all deepen our understanding and appreciation of the land and the people who have called it home for generations.

Big news for the AIRRAQ Network! 🚨

Crews have been making significant progress on the AIRRAQ Network, a project with Bethel Native Corporation that will deliver fiber connectivity to 13 communities across the YK Delta. The IT Intrepid, a fiber laying ship, has successfully completed the installation, splicing, and inspection of subsea fiber for the first phase of the project. Meanwhile, the Unalaq landing craft and support vessels have laid the shore ends in Platinum, Apogak, and Dillingham, with final splicing underway in Apogak.

Construction is nearing completion in Bethel, where the local network is being upgraded to seamlessly integrate with the incoming fiber. Bethel will be the first city to come online, followed by 12 more communities in the region.

The launch of Bethel on the AIRRAQ Network, with urban speeds and unlimited data plans, will be here before we know it. Learn more about the AIRRAQ Network: news.gci.com/topic/airraq-network.

Credit Union 1 proves Alaskans know no limits. As the only state-chartered financial co-op in Alaska, Credit Union 1 has spent over 70 years building its business, adding on digital services, a mobile branch and giving back to the communities it serves. We’re proud to help Credit Union 1 power this essential service.

Technology has been critical to Credit Union 1's growth, meaning more services for members. Chief Technology Officer Keith Bennett recalls, “We first offered 24/7 access to accounts back in '86, and we've continued to grow since then. Today, we offer digital services like Interactive Teller Machines (ITMs), which allow face-to-face interactions with members even in the most remote areas of Alaska.” Now, Credit Union 1 has 14 locations, mobile banking, and more than 40 ITMs across Alaska.

With GCI’s support, Credit Union 1 has been able to bring full banking services to places like Kodiak, Ketchikan, and Kotzebue where they plan to open the first credit union branch above the Arctic Circle. Bennett explains, “We rolled out Alaska’s first mobile branch in 2022 to bring banking services to communities on the road system and to events like the Alaska State Fair. GCI has been a key partner in adding cellular service to the truck in 2024, helping us grow and ensuring we can serve Alaskans wherever they are.”

On top of an excellent banking experience, Bennett says taking care of communities is also at the heart of CU1’s mission. “Our goal is to serve the underserved across Alaska, to help Alaskans with their financial well-being and stability. Being a co-op and not-for-profit, we get to do things in the communities we serve that other financial institutions wouldn’t. We give back to the communities.” This community-first focus is reflected in programs like an annual scholarship initiative and employee volunteer efforts. “This year, we’ve set a goal of 3,500 hours of volunteering across the organization because we believe that healthy Alaska communities mean a healthy economy,” Bennett explains.

As Credit Union 1 continues to expand its physical and digital presence, it remains committed to a mission of improving financial stability for Alaskans. "We have big plans to open two new branches this year and are constantly working to expand our digital offerings to meet the needs of our members across the state," says Bennett.

“I was the first woman to become a manager in Technology Solutions and worked my way up to vice president within the department. It’s one of the things I’m proudest of. At the time, it felt like a male-dominated world, but I worked hard and showed that women can lead in this space too. Now I see more and more women stepping into these roles, and it’s amazing to be part of that change. It's exciting that we see a lot of women in the technical side of the house.

I’ve been with GCI for a long time, and what’s kept me here is simple: I love helping people. Over 22 years ago I started in customer service and worked my way up to become a Principal Program Manager. Along the way, I’ve tackled some massive projects, including the incredible challenge of building out the TERRA network across rural Alaska. It was tough, but exciting, and I always felt like part of a team that was changing lives.

My biggest piece of advice for people coming up in their careers is to not be afraid to ask for help. At GCI, I’ve learned that sometimes you just need to go for it. The worst they can say is no, but you’ll never know unless you try. As I prepare to retire, I’m looking forward to spending more time on my passions, like genealogy, gardening, and volunteering in Willow. But no matter where life takes me next, I’ll always be grateful for the journey I’ve had at GCI.”

Rebecca is a Principal Program Manager and one of the first members of GWeN (GCI Women’s Network) and has been at GCI for over 22 years. In Rebecca’s spare time, you can find her adventuring around Willow and spending time with her family and friends.

“Growing up here, GCI was always part of my daily life, I got my first phone from them! When I had the chance to join the company, it felt natural.

One of my favorite work memories so far was traveling to Bethel. It really opened my eyes to what GCI is capable of and how much they’re willing to do to make sure all Alaskans have the resources they need. What really sets GCI apart for me is how they emphasize the importance of being on Indigenous land in Alaska. They prove it through meaningful actions, like celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day. The event that was held last year opened my eyes to GCI’s values and how much GCI genuinely cares about Alaska and its people.

My team has also been a huge part of what makes this job so rewarding. They’re supportive and fun to work with. My manager, Liz, and her boss, Katie, are two of my biggest inspirations. They’ve shown me what it means to be a Trailblazer in a male-dominated field, and GCI gives them the platform to lead by example.

I’ve only been with GCI for a little over a year, but I’m excited to keep growing with the company and see where it takes me. It’s been the perfect start to my career, and I couldn’t imagine a better place to be.”

Mayce is a Project Coordinator on the Corporate Properties Team and has been with GCI just over a year. When she’s not working, you can find her shopping around Alaska or spending time with her rescue dog, Sirius!

In recognition of Su***de Prevention Month, GCI is highlighting recipients of the GCI Su***de Prevention Fund, showcasing the extraordinary things they’ve accomplished across Alaska. One of these organizations, Railbelt Mental Health & Addictions- RMHA is a nonprofit outpatient community behavioral health center located in Nenana, Alaska.

RMHA has partnered with cultural knowledge bearers and the Nenana Native Association to host biweekly cultural nights. These events teach students traditional skills like beading, skin sewing, and kuspuk making while fostering relationships and emphasizing positive self-identity. With support from the GCI Su***de Prevention Fund grant, RMHA expanded offerings to include workshops on how to make fry bread and crafting bone bead necklaces. Elders played a key role, passing down knowledge and cultural stories while engaging the youth in these meaningful activities.

“During our fry bread-making class, a local Elder demonstrated how she used her hands as measuring tools instead of modern utensils,” shared Railbelt Mental Health and Addictions Youth Group Coordinator Brittany Rush. “She explained that when she was a little girl, there were no measuring tools, so she learned to use her hands to measure ingredients. As she added flour to the water, she assessed the consistency and informed the children that the dough was still too sticky by showing them how it stuck to her hands. She emphasized the importance of being able to see and feel the difference between dough that's too sticky and dough that is just right for making fry bread. Each child took turns shaping the dough while stories of fry bread were shared. The Elder encouraged everyone to share their fry bread-making stories they have made with their own families. She stressed the importance of coming together and working as a community. At the end of the event, the group shared the bread and took some home to their families. The Elder encouraged and emphasized the value of sharing and taking care of one another.”

Did you know that the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities’ robot dog Aurora sees the world in a whole new light? Using LiDAR technology (light detection and ranging), Aurora scans the runways at the Fairbanks International Airport with precision, detecting every movement and object. Thousands of laser pulses create a real-time, detailed map of its surroundings, keeping the runway clear of birds and other hazards.

Thanks to GCI’s Hometown 5G network, Aurora stays connected, ensuring instant data sharing and coordination with air traffic control leading to safer runways. 🛰️

We’re proud to be a part of innovative technologies like this in Alaska!

“I don’t know if I chose GCI or if GCI chose me, but I’m grateful it worked out the way it did. I’ve been with GCI since 2018, and it’s been a life-changing experience. A big reason I ended up here was thanks to my neighbor, Dennis, who worked here for 36 years. He encouraged me to apply and I’m thankful every day that he did.

Working at GCI has also allowed me to see new parts of Alaska. Born and raised in Eagle River, I was always on the road system, but now I’ve traveled from the Panhandle to the Far North. I love seeing the wide range of cultures across our state and how GCI serves every community.

From the start, I was fortunate to have mentors like Carolyn, Mike and Liz who supported me every step of the way. Their guidance was invaluable and made me feel welcome and part of a great team. They truly changed my life and I’m excited to continue this journey and see where it takes me. GCI has been a life changer, and I feel lucky to be here.”

Jesse is a Project Manager II at GCI. In his free time, you can find him at Big Lake with his wife boating, swimming or relaxing on the dock. During the winter, he loves snowmachining and snowboarding whenever he gets the chance!

As part of Su***de Prevention Month, GCI is featuring GCI Su***de Prevention Fund recipients to spotlight their impactful work and raise awareness about vital su***de prevention efforts throughout Alaska. The Alaska Eating Disorders Alliance (AKEDA) works to raise awareness, provide education, advocate to increase access to care, and support those affected by eating disorders across Alaska, collaborating with local and national organizations to offer training and resources for effective treatment and intervention.

AKEDA and the Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation teamed up to create an eating disorders screening and intervention curriculum for medical health providers. This evidence-based training, developed with local and national experts, focused on integrating screening within BBAHC's diabetes clinic, addressing the heightened risk of eating disorders among these patients. The program included virtual and in-person sessions, and its success fostered greater collaboration between diabetes and behavioral health teams, resulting in early identification and intervention for patients previously overlooked.

The training, launched in February 2024, averaged 12 participants per virtual session, and key direct care providers and senior leadership from BBAHC were present at in-person sessions. These sessions have increased awareness of the link between body image, eating disorders, and patient care, leading to stronger provider confidence in treating these disorders. Moving forward, AKEDA aims to expand this training to other regions and will continue supporting providers with further educational resources, including a fall Project ECHO series for ongoing support.
