“I was born and raised in Alaska and went to UAA: University of Alaska Anchorage for a degree in computer systems engineering with minors in mathematics, electrical engineering and computer science. During my senior year at UAA, I got an internship at GCI with our application system support team. I’ve been at GCI ever since!

The culture of GCI is very team driven. When I'm facing a problem in my day-to-day work, I know I've got an entire team that is excited to look at the problem with me. We have a very high level of collaboration where we’re constantly calling each other and mentoring one another. We succeed and we fail as a team — immediately lending a hand to one another. There’s a very high degree of teamwork. That’s what I love most about working at GCI.

Since GCI is an Alaska company and being born and raised here, I love to feel like I'm giving back to the community, or at least helping improve the community in my own way. It’s what wakes me up in the morning.

Ultimately, I'm really proud to be an Alaskan. From UAA to GCI, Alaska has built who I am."

Kyle is a Data Engineer in Enterprise Analytics and has been at GCI for almost eight years. When Kyle isn’t at work, you’ll find him golfing, enjoying the last of this summer’s weather, walking his dogs with his wife and skiing in the winter!

Attention Ketchikan Neighbors! 📢
GCI is hosting a food drive at the local retail store to support those impacted by the recent deadly landslide in Ketchikan. Items collected through the food drive will be donated to the The Salvation Army Gateway Corps - Ketchikan.

To help with the relief effort, GCI is donating 500 pounds of shelf stable food and $1,000 to the Salvation Army of Ketchikan to use toward additional supplies.

Since 1996, Reecia Wilson, a born-and-raised Alaskan, has been running this iconic Juneau restaurant. With deep roots in the community and a passion for hospitality, Reecia has turned the Hangar into a beloved local institution.

Running a restaurant that serves a wide variety of food and guests is no small feat, but Reecia and her team have it down to a science. Behind the scenes, GCI plays a crucial role in keeping everything running smoothly. “[During COVID], we upgraded to a closed network powered by GCI’s internet. It’s essential for our security cameras and new handheld point-of-sale systems, which require a strong, consistent connection,” Reecia notes. "GCI has been instrumental in keeping everything running."

The Hangar on the Wharf was one of the first in Juneau to implement handheld point-of-sale devices, a move that required dependable internet service. "GCI’s internet has been a game-changer for us, especially during the busy summer months when reliable service is so important," Reecia adds. "And when we do face challenges, GCI’s business support team has always been there to help us get back on track quickly." GCI’s services also support the restaurant’s phone system, which is important for handling reservations and daily operations.

Whether you’re a local or just visiting, the Hangar on the Wharf offers more than just a meal. From the waterfront views to the delicious food and efficient service, everything comes together to make the Hangar a must-visit destination in Juneau.

“I've been living in Bethel for 18, going on 19 years. It's become home and I've really become a part of the community. They've accepted me as their family member. I love that about Bethel. It’s a true community. When something happens, everybody really comes together. They all join in to help. Whether it’s something tragic or something wonderful, they're all there. It's such a great support system. Bethel might be a small town, but it sure has a big heart.

When you get out on the Kuskokwim River, it’s like you're in a different place. I grew up in California when I was younger, and even though the weather was great, it doesn't give you that same feeling as living in Alaska does — where there is a true familial bond. People in Bethel really care and step up for one another. You couldn’t ask for a better place to live.

At GCI, I love helping people, especially Bethel’s elders. I enjoy taking the extra time to sit with them and help. I want to continue to be a part of our customer’s great experience. It’s the most rewarding part. Our core group that works at the Bethel GCI store is so fun and our boss is amazing. From Friday morning pump-ups to getting together with our kids, we’re all very family-oriented which is the best part.”

Melissa is a Senior Customer Service Sales Specialist for our Bethel retail store and has been at GCI for almost nine years. When Melissa’s not at work, you’ll find her spending time with her daughter and son, going on evening walks and getting together with friends!

Attention Juneau Neighbors 🔉

GCI is hosting an in-store food drive at its Juneau retail location, supporting those affected by the recent historic flooding in the community.

The Southeast Alaska Food Bank public pantry is open every Thursday from 3 – 5:30pm. If you or someone you know is seeking assistance from the flood, you can go there for support.

Additional assistance is available through the Red Cross, which is providing free disaster relief comfort and clean up kits to the community. Those in need of assistance can call the Red Cross at 1-800-733-2767, where they will be connected to local staff in Juneau who can provide assistance.

“People in the military usually don't find their first job right away after retiring, but I found mine the day I started with GCI. It's a great company, and I'm proud to be a part of it. After retiring from the Air Force and settling in Anchorage, GCI gave me an opportunity to join their team. Now? I don't ever want to leave.

After spending 25 years in the military, you really learn the value behind team building — that bond, unity, and a feeling of family. When I came to GCI with these tools, I was able to use that knowledge to manage people, places, and things. Dan Brogan gave us the tools to run a business, and we've started an intern program where we've hired nine out of 19 interns as full-time employees. It's amazing to find such talent and give them a future. When our interns are ready to move on, I set up mock interviews with them, study the job they're going into, and prepare them thoroughly. I've worked hard to ensure that these young people, whether they stay with GCI or move on, are prepared and confident.

I’ve had mentors who helped me, so I want to be that same mentor for others. Watching someone come up through the ranks, whether in the military or at GCI, and seeing them be successful — that's the reward. I want to continue to network and bring departments together. The more approachable we are, the better. I love seeing the changes and improvements made over the last couple of years, and I'm excited to see what the future holds. This job has been a blessing, and I feel lucky to be here."

Chris is a Senior Manager of the shipment and fulfillment supply chain and has worked at GCI for almost five years. He spent 25 years in the Airforce working in logistics and we’re so grateful for his service. In his free time, you can find Chris camping with his wife, daughter, son in-law and two grandchildren, boating on Prince William Sound or four wheeling with friends!

If you’re fishing for a great meal in Juneau, cast your net at Deckhand Dave's Fish Tacos! 🌮 No matter the day of the week, you’ll likely find a crowd gathered outside of Deckhand Dave's food truck in downtown Juneau. As a lifelong Alaskan, Dave started his culinary journey nine years ago after being inspired by the vibrant food scene he experienced growing up in Alaska — from Nome to Anchorage to Juneau.

Deckhand Dave’s first opened its doors in 2016 and quickly reeled in success. The food truck and their famous fish tacos helped create one of Alaska’s first food truck parks, which attracts locals and visitors with its open-air atmosphere and multiple vendor choices. "The goal is to provide a great experience for everyone," Dave says. "We get a mix of visitors and locals, and it’s all about making them feel welcome."

Deckhand Dave's relies on GCI's blazing-fast and reliable internet to keep things running smoothly. "Our POS systems need to work perfectly, and GCI makes sure they do," Dave explains. "If there's ever an issue, GCI is right there to help us out." With our dedicated tech team on standby, Dave and his crew can focus on serving up delicious food without worrying about a reliable internet connection. Beyond keeping the POS systems humming, Dave also uses GCI internet to power the perfect soundtrack for the area, adding music to the special atmosphere of the food truck park.

Today, Dave's original business venture has turned into more than just a food truck. As the food truck park expands, to include more food options and a full bar, one thing remains constant — his commitment to providing an authentic Alaska culinary experience, supported by GCI’s advanced network.

“Since I was young, I've been involved in nonprofits due to my genetic connective tissue disorder called Marfan Syndrome. Because of it, I had open heart surgery at 18 years old for a cardiac pacemaker, which was replaced last December. So, sharing my story about my Marfan syndrome and learning about others' passions for volunteering for nonprofits like the American Heart Association and The Marfan Foundation has been incredibly rewarding.

Naturally, giving back to these organizations has always been a big part of my life. I've been involved with the Marfan Foundation and the American Heart Association for many years, serving on multiple boards and committees.

At GCI, we are encouraged to do community service with 16 hours of paid time off dedicated to volunteer commitments. I love that the company offers so many opportunities for employee engagement, through volunteer hours and other events, that help us learn more about our colleagues. One of the special parts about volunteering is the more we understand each other, the better and more successful we are. Volunteering and engaging with members of other teams can benefit our day-to-day work, and the more we understand each other the more successful we are as a team.

That’s what makes the dynamic team at GCI so fantastic. We have strong relationships and we constantly support each other. We engage in fun activities and also do meaningful community service acts together. The culture of taking care of customers and employees is a big reason I've stayed at GCI for all these years. They genuinely care about our growth and success.”

Andrea is a GCI Commercial Business Manager and has worked at GCI for over three years. In her free time, you can find Andrea flying with her aviation-loving family, playing piano, or fishing on the weekends with her husband!

“In 2006, I came to Alaska on vacation from Alberta, Canada. I fell in love, got married and started at GCI in 2008. I’ve been married for 17 years and worked for GCI for 16 years, so my time at GCI has helped me blossom into who I am today.

In 2018, my husband was diagnosed with kidney failure. My co-workers at GCI were there during the whole process. They saw how it affected my life, the changes that needed to be made and were super accommodating. The support that was given by my managers was one of the many reasons I stuck around at GCI for so long. I've always had amazing managers at GCI. Seeing them try their best to accommodate whatever life changes I had to make just showed me how much they cared. I come to work every day with my best efforts. Knowing that I’m working with a team that authentically cares about me is hard to find. We get to know each other's families and create personal relationships; I would describe our culture as one big family.

Life is great right now. I don't want to think about anything too serious because I've already dealt with many serious things. I want to spend more time laughing with the people I truly love, doing my absolute best at everything I do and enjoying quality time with my husband.”

Big news! The IT Intrepid has docked at Gold Creek, BC to transfer fiber cables for the undersea portions of phases 1 and 2 of the AIRRAQ Network and phase 2 of the Aleutians Fiber Project. After leaving Germany in May, the fiber is set to complete its 9,300 mile voyage this month. This fiber is essential in our ongoing work to bridge the digital divide in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta and the Aleutians. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to work hard to connect Alaskans.
