Often I think about the fact that I named my studio “Surreal Studios“. It’s a name I came up with in high school because I had a book of Salvador Dali paintings that I loved as a kid. And I understood that Surrealism in one form means taking two unrelated objects or ideas, combining them, and finding out what the third thing is that they create, usually a dream-like state. Often it is a creative miracle. Sometimes it is not, but that’s why you keep at it. Salvador Dali of course took it to the extreme and created an utterly novel world.

Fast forward to putting out my first album entitled “Nightworks“. I sometimes think that might have been a better name for the studio. I once found a definition for the word before I named my album Nightworks, and it said that the “nightworks“ were the part of the lock, that you don’t see, but which make the mechanism operate. You know, the tumblers, etc.

I very much like that idea because recording and creativity all happen beneath and invisibly to what it is people eventually hear.

Anyway, a few people have asked what the new studio looks like so tonight I took a photograph and messed with it a little bit. I know everybody is tired of people posting AI, but I feel like I have certain rights to “surrealism.“ Largely because I hear people misuse the word all the time. So I took that photograph of the control room, processed it a few times, and here are the results.

Tonight I am happy with the name “Surreal Studios“. What say you?
