Anchorage friends, go see The Eyes of Freedom Memorial. It’s at the Alaska Airlines Center this weekend. It pays tribute to the 22 Marines and one Navy Corpsman of Lima Company who died while deployed in Iraq in 2005. One of the brave young men was Service High graduate Grant B. Fraser. Go learn about these remarkable men. This memorial is breathtaking and important. The Silent Battle sculpture…powerful…and visitors are encouraged to place their hands on it to share their energy of healing and love. Go! It’s free! Walk through the doors of the Alaska Airlines Center and take a left. The artist, Anita Miller, will be there Saturday & is happy to share her experience in creating it. I promise you won’t regret taking an hour of your weekend and seeing it for yourself.

This weekend I had the chance to visit Utqiaġvik, also know as Barrow. It’s the northern most community in Alaska, and North America for that matter. We took part in the Arctic Encounter Symposium excursion day that brought together world leaders and state officials all focused on the Arctic and its importance. We visited the Iñupiat Heritage Center, Iḷisaġvik Tribal College, Barrow High School, and even enjoyed a local parade celebrating springtime. It may be cold in Utqiaġvik, but those who live there are warm & welcoming.
A nice way to wrap-up this year’s series. Aladdin was vibrant, entertaining, and joyful. So much talent on that stage. Can’t wait to see what announces later this month as next season’s line-up. Did you see all four shows this season? If so, what was your favorite? I’m a huge Hamilton fan, but I think was my fave this go around. Thank you, Heidi, for being my date. This week, fancy theatre. Instead of watching Dallas finish under the Burled Arch, I walked out to the frozen Norton Sound. This is right before he gets to Front Street and heads to the finish line. Fun to see all the locals cheering for him! Don’t worry, Your Alaska Link’s Ian Stewart was at the Burled Arch and captured Dallas’s exciting finish.

Juneau Day 3- Surprise Juneau, More❄️❄️❄️❄️! That’s what we woke up to Thursday in Alaska’s capital city. Thursday’s adventures included stand-ups in front of the Capitol and a visit to Amalga Distillery..they’re a semi-finalist for the prestigious James Beard Award…La’shawn Donelson is working on a story about their success. The distillery gorgeous! (We were working, so didn’t get any taste-testing in. I must go back when I’m off the clock!) We wrapped up the day with a flight back to cold, no…frigid..Anchorage. Day 2 in Juneau...lots of good stuff Wednesday! We started our morning at the Juneau Animal Rescue with precious pups and cool cats. JAR needs a new facility to better serve the community. We're working on a story about their fundraising efforts. Then, off to the Capitol to learn about Senate Bill 88. It aims to revise retirement benefits for public employees and teachers. There's a lot more to it so we spoke with Senator Bill Wielechowski and State Senator Robert Myers to get the deets. Finally, I ate some delicious food at Salt Restaraunt, Juneau, Ak with Chelsea Foster & famous snowboarder Callan Chythlook Sifsof. All in all, we ran into only one unruly cat...and it wasn't at the Capitol building! #youralaskalink #trillontv
My timing was excellent today! I was in downtown Anchorage at the Hotel Captain Cook & Pastry Chef Joe Hickel was putting the finishing touches on his Christmas Gingerbread Village. It is delightful and a must-see! This is his last year creating this masterpiece. Oh Alaska, we’ve been so lucky to enjoy his work over the past 40 years.
