Although soccer remains the most popular sport in Ethiopia, the country is known by the rest of the world as home to some for greatest long distance runners, including legendary Abebe Bikila, who put the country on the athletics map of the world when he won the 1960 Rome Olympics' marathon barefoot. Mamo Wolde and Miruts Yifter followed in his footsteps as did many others such as Haile Gebrselassie, Kenenisa Bekele, Tirunesh Dibaba, Meseret Defar, etc....

High Altitude Training
Ethiopia, together with Kenya, is a power in long distance running in the world. While no one can dispute that Ethiopian athletes excel in international competitions because of their hard work, dedication and discipline, training at high altitude gives them a much needed edge. International athletes have also taken notice and are now frequent visitors of Haile Gebrselassie’s Yaya Village and Kenenisa Bekele’s in Sendafa . Ethiopia’s Tourism Potential
Ethiopia is a country blessed with great history and culture. Furthermore, the country has beautiful landscapes, which are suitable for a range of outdoor activities, including walking, fishing, bird watching, mountain and rock climbing, white-water rafting, kayaking, canoeing, water skiing, trekking, caving and paragliding. However the link between tourism and sport activities in the country has not been adequately promoted.

The number of Ethiopians & Ethiopian-Americans living and working in the United States is estimated to be around 1 million. They often travel to Ethiopia and within the US. Ethiosports will serve as a great platform for travel and tourism-related companies to explore this niche & untapped market.
