We are watching the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms to develop late this afternoon and evening across the Lehigh Valley and Philly regions. Storms have the potential to produce strong damaging winds, hail, frequent cloud to ground lightning and heavy downpours. Lastest mesoscale discussion has a 60% chance of a severe thunderstorm watch being issued. We believe that a watch will eventually be issued later this afternoon across the region. The Storm Prediction Center has placed the region under Enhanced risk for stronger storms to develop. If you are located in the orange area on the first map you are more likely to see stronger storms later today. Please be on the look out for severe thunderstorms to develop later this afternoon and evening.

Potential for strong to severe thunderstorms early this evening. All storms that move through will have the potential for frequent cloud to ground lightning and strong winds. Heavy downpours will also be associated with all storms. The whole region is under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch.

Potential for severe thunderstorms late tomorrow afternoon and evening for Eastern PA. The Storm Prediction Center has placed the entire region under enhanced risk for severe storms tomorrow. We will be watching as a line of strong storms should begin to form in the central part of the state during the early afternoon hours. This line will eventually reach the region by the late afternoon and early evening hours in the Lehigh Valley and Philly. There will be plenty of instability which will allow favorable conditions for this line to strengthen as it moves eastward.

What to be expected:
-Strong Damaging Winds up to 60-65 mph.
- Frequent Cloud to Ground Lightning
-Heavy Downpours
-Hail up to 1” in diameter
-Although the SPC has the region under the potential for a few tornadoes I believe this is rather low and would only occur if discrete cells form out ahead of the main line. So right now I believe the tornado threat is rather low.

We will be back on tomorrow with another update, so please stay tuned.

Snow incoming! Crazy to think just yesterday we saw temperatures get into the 70s in the Lehigh Valley! As the cold front came through last night temperatures dropped off behind it. We are watching now as snow should overspread the region in the morning on Wednesday. The snow will continue for much of the day on Wednesday before it finally comes to an end in the evening. I know this seems like a nice duration for the snow to fall but temperatures will be marginal and any accumulations should be confined to grassy and non paved surfaces. As of now it is looking like 1-2” of snow could accumulate on non paved surfaces. Higher snowfall accumulations are more likely to occur in higher elevations like the Pocono region. If heavy snowfall rates occur there is a slight possibility of minor slushy accumulations on paved surfaces but any accumulations should be on non paved or grassy surfaces. I hope everyone has a great night!

Final Call!

Hope everyone had a great day today! Our wintry system is approaching the region. We should look to see precipitation move in between 9-11 pm tonight. The precipitation should begin as sleet in the Lehigh Valley and it should continue as sleet for a good 3 to 6 hours. We will see a transition then to freezing rain during the late overnight hours. The freezing rain should continue during the morning hours before the system finally clears out between 9-11 am. The Philly region could see a very brief period of sleet but the precipitation should change over to freezing rain quickly there. We do expect Philly to transition to plain rain but NW of Philly could hold on to the freezing rain longer. Imagines below are of the latest HRRR. The orange on the map is sleet with the purple showing freezing rain.

Impacts and projections:

Travel will be impacted as icy conditions will be likely. Use caution if you are out traveling.

Lehigh Valley
Sleet accumulations of 1 - 1.5”
Ice accumulations of 0.1 - 0.25”

Philly
Sleet accumulations up to a coating
Ice accumulations of 0.1 - 0.2” (high accumulations in the NW suburbs of Philly with lower total in the city)

Happy Saturday Everyone!

We are watching the potential for a snow squall line to move through the Eastern PA region early this afternoon. We are watching the potential for stronger winds and heavy snow to fall as this line moves through. If you are out driving be sure to use caution as the heavy snow and strong winds could lead to whiteout conditions for a brief period of time. This snow squall line is similiar to what you would see in the summer with a severe thunderstorm line that moves through. Instead this is occurring in the winter so you get a line that forms as snow. Just like these lines in the summer, you can get strong winds gusts and heavy precipitation. This is combination will lead to whiteout conditions in spots so please use caution!

Good Afternoon Y’all,

Brett here with an update on a significant wind event that will impact the entire area from the Lehigh Valley eastward into New Jersey. Short-range guidance has continued to point strongly toward widespread wind gusts of up to 50 mph with some locations experiencing higher, especially in high elevations. There are Wind Advisories for sustained winds of 20-30 mph with gusts to 50 mph for the entire area and gale warnings issued for off the coast. The timing of the highest winds will be during the overnight hours as some moderate rainfall helps to mix down some higher wind gusts, although it’s already become quite breezy out this afternoon ahead of the front. Winds will slowly taper off during the day tomorrow.

Temperatures will drop from morning highs in the mid 50s to low 60s (west to east) to afternoon temps in the 30s and 40s. Back to reality.

Snow arriving overnight!

I hope everyone has been enjoying these nice temperatures we have been experiencing the past few days! Although most of the region saw temperatures get up into the 50s again today, we will see snow overspread the region later tonight. A cold front will push through and allow cold air to move back in over the region. Snow is expected to begin around just before midnight tonight. It will continue overnight before finally moving out during the morning on Sunday. We aren’t looking to see anything major as far as snowfall amounts go but it is looking like 1-3” could accumulate for the Lehigh Valley and Philly regions. The snow should begin to stick mostly on grassy surfaces at the onset but some slushy accumulations should occur on paved surfaces during the overnight hours and on Sunday morning. If you are out driving overnight or on Sunday morning be sure to use caution and give yourself some extra time. High temperatures on Sunday will only reach the low to mid 30s with highs in the 20s expected for Monday. It will surely be much colder than what we have seen the last few days. I hope everyone has a great night!

Good evening. We are currently watching an area of low pressure off the southeast coast. It is expected to strengthen rapidly late tonight into Saturday.

Snow is now developing and will become steadier and heavier. Winds will also be on the increase late tonight and especially Saturday.

Snowfall amounts we are looking at 3-6 across the Lehigh valley, 6-10 across Philadelphia and central New Jersey and 12-18 at the shore.

There remains still a bit of uncertainty on exact track of this system and the evolution of it. If the storm tracks more north and west expect higher amounts. If the storm tracks further southeast then amount will be lower.

If any significant changes occur we will update you as soon as we can. Stay safe everyone.

01/18/2022

Good evening everyone! We are tracking the potential for a few chances at snow in the next 5 days. The first is becoming more likely while the second is still up in the air. The first chance at snow this week looks to move in by the early morning hours on Thursday. This one is looking to be more minor in nature as it will be a quick hitting snow. With that he said it is looking like most of the Lehigh Valley and Philly areas could see 2-3” of snow with this system. The snow should begin early Thursday morning but finish out by the mid morning hours. As we watch this system move out we are keeping an eye out for the potential for more snow on Saturday. We saw this system diminish today on models, but it’s really hard to get a grasp on it at this time as our Thursday system will have an impact on the effects of our Saturday system. Models could be having a hard time figuring out how to handle the weekend system and they may not be able to get a good grasp on it until our Thursday system moves out. We will be back with more updates on the weekend storm as we get closer to it, so please stay tuned as we gather more details from upcoming model runs. Short range models should be starting to come into play in the next 24-48 hours and as they do we should see how the weekend system plays out. Hope everyone has a great night!

Good evening everyone! Snow has continued for much of the evening here in Allentown. The transition over to sleet is on our doorstep though. As seen in the first image the yellow shaded area is where the sleet is already happening. This changeover line should move in between 10-10:30 pm. The frozen precipitation will continue for a short period later tonight, but we will see a changeover to rain overnight. As we see the change over to rain we will see strong winds pick up with it. The rain should end by the early morning hours on Monday. After a lull in the precipitation we could see a period of snow start back up in the morning on Monday. This shouldn’t last too long but short range models are starting to show it tonight. After our storm begins to pivot out snow showers could be expected at anytime during the day on Monday. Hope everyone has a great night!

Potential for significant rainfall with flooding likely on Wednesday 9/1

The remnants of Hurricane Ida will move in over the region overnight tonight. Some showers will be expected through the morning hours on Wednesday before we see our system evolve into a steadier heavier rain in the afternoon. The rain will pick up significantly by the late afternoon hours and we could potentially see rainfall rates of 1-2” an hour Wednesday evening and the early overnight hours. This will lead to very high rainfall amounts over the region. We have seen some higher amounts of rainfall over the past few weeks which will likely cause significant flooding. A Flash Flood Watch is in place for the entire region. As the heavy rain picks up tomorrow Flash Flooding is very likely to occur. We will see dangerous driving conditions and it is important that you do not drive over any flooding waters! Please use caution if you are out in the evening and make sure you have supplies ready along with fuel for generators.

Impacts:

Lehigh Valley and Central NJ: most people in these regions will likely see anywhere from 4-7” of rainfall with some spots potentially exceeding 7”. This area is more than likely to see widespread flooding.

Philly Region: this area is likely to see 2-4” of rainfall with some isolated amounts of up to 5” in spots.

PLEASE BE SAFE EVERYONE!
