The 2020 NOVA Student Film Festival International has been postponed for now. Until we can hold the festival in person or online, I decided to celebrate our festival by highlighting 1 film per week from our past festivals. 2 weeks ago, I shared with you a film, the first international co-production, between film students in Ethiopian and NOVA students, "Final Exam", filmed in 2016.

In 2019, NOVA Alexandria film students partnered with film students from Oaxaca Mexico for the Films Without Walls international co-production on our theme for the year: Immigration & Refugees. Our partnering team is made up of film students from 2 institutions: 100Volando Escuela de Cine and from UNIVAS - Universidad José Vasconcelos de Oaxaca.
It was a labor of Love, Solidarity, Struggle, Learning…and the result is a film that was shot both in Oaxaca, Mexico and in the USA (Arlington & Alexandria, VA); the story starts in Oaxaca, Mexico and ends in Virginia, USA. I present to you:

week 2 - The 2020 NOVA Student Film Festival International would have taken place this past Thursday, April 23rd. Until we are able to hold the festival in person or online, I decided to celebrate our festival by highlighting 1 film per week from our past festivals.Last week I shared with you a film, an international collaboration, between film students in Ethiopian and NOVA students, "Final Exam". I hope you enjoyed watching the film. This was the film that started the "Films Without Walls" series (more on that another time). Before my NOVA students started to work on the film, I instructed them to first do research on Ethiopia know everything there is to know about the country, as it is sad to say that most students in the US know very little about the rest of the world. That was objective number 1. The other objectives 2 - 100 :-) were to learn the process of filmmaking; creative collaboration not just within one's crew but with a crew from a different country. At the end of the experience, I asked the editor of the NOVA side to put together a chronicle documenting their experience on this project. Here, in their own words:

(Editing project) 5:38 minutes | Documentary | USA | Editor: Matthew Vargas A film about the process it took to make FINAL EXAM, last year’s FCI production. ...

The 2020 NOVA Student Film Festival International (https://blogs.nvcc.edu/nsff/) would have taken place this past Thursday, April 23rd. Until we are able to hold the festival in person or online, I decided to celebrate our festival by highlighting 1 film per week from our past festivals. Today, I start with a film that is close to my heart, a collaboration between NOVA Cinema students and Cinema students (at the time, 2016) in Ethiopia. The film is entitled "Final Exam". While the film is moving, what was more precious was the process by which these 2 sets of students who live on 2 different continents and who know nothing about one another, came together, developed means of regular communication, shared ideas, held meetings and finally gave birth to this film! This was the first film that inspired the "Films Without Walls" series of our festival. I hope you enjoy this film as much as I enjoyed witnessing its making:
