Compression is the process of reducing the difference between the loudest and quietest parts of a sound signal. It works by automatically lowering the volume of louder sounds and, in some cases, raising the level of softer sounds. This control over dynamics makes the overall audio signal more consistent, balanced, and polished. Compressors achieve this by using key parameters such as threshold, ratio, attack, release, and makeup gain.
-Threshold determines the volume level at which compression begins.
-Ratio sets the amount of volume reduction applied once the threshold is crossed (e.g., a 4:1 ratio means that for every 4 dB above the threshold, only 1 dB is output).
-Attack controls how quickly the compressor responds to loud signals, while release controls how quickly it stops compressing after the signal drops below the threshold.
-Makeup gain boosts the overall output level to compensate for the volume reduction caused by compression.

Compression is widely used in mixing and mastering to achieve consistency, punch, and clarity. It can make vocals sit more evenly in a mix, add sustain to instruments like guitars, or make drums hit harder and more “in your face.” However, too much compression can make a mix sound flat, lifeless, or “squashed,” so it’s important to use it with care. 🎧
