In 57 AD, a Japanese envoy from a state known as โ€œNaโ€ arrived in China. In response, Emperor Guangwu of China ordered the creation of this gold seal to be taken back to Japan, thus officially recognizing it as a country and not just a geographical region. The seal was discovered in 1784 off the southern coast of Japan, confirming the historical account. The inscription on the seal identifies the King of Na as a vassal of the Han Emperor. Different materials were used for seals to indicate social hierarchyโ€”bronze for citizens, silver for lords, gold for kings, and jade for the Emperor. Although Na might have been just one of several political entities in Japan during that time, it is unique in having textual evidence to support its existence.

King Ramesses II on his chariot โ€“ Battle of Kadesh

New Kingdom, 19th Dynasty, ca. 1274 BC.
Relief from inside the Great Temple of Ramesses II at Abu Simbel.

The battle of Kadesh is one of the worldโ€™s largest chariot battles, fought beside the Orontes River, King Ramesses II sought to wrest Syria from the Hittites and recapture the Hittite-held city of Kadesh. There was a day of carnage as some 5,000 chariots charged into the fray, but no outright victor.

The world"s first true gold coin.

Having pioneered the refining process for separating electrum into pure silver and gold, the Lydians under King Croesus introduced a revolutionary bimetallic coinage system around 550 BC.

The gold Croesus stater, equal to ten of the corresponding silver staters, depicted a roaring lion facing off against a bull โ€“ perhaps representing the royal lion of Lydia leaping to attack its neighbouring Greek city states, symbolised by the bull of Hellenic Zeus.

Crown Prince Thutmose lying on a bier

This small statuette shows the Crown Prince Thutmose lying on a lion bier. The two goddesses Isis and Nephthys are depicted at the head and the raised foot end.

Queen Tiye and King Amenhotep III had at least six children together: two sons and four daughters. The eldest son Thutmose died in the 30th year of his fatherโ€™s reign and his younger brother Amenhotep, later also known as Amenhotep IV or Akhenaten, was appointed heir to the throne.

On the mummy shaped body of the Crown Prince Thutmose, the deceasedโ€™s Ba bird spreads its wings protectively over him. The so-called soul bird comes closest to the symbolized idea of โ€‹โ€‹the ancient Egyptians that the soul in the form of the Ba could leave the body and return to it again.

This event is in Spell 89 from the Book of the Dead and is intended to cause โ€œ[โ€ฆ] that my ba comes to me from every place where it is [โ€ฆ] that he will see his body again, and sit on his mummy. He did not perish and was not destroyed in eternity.โ€

New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, reign of Amenhotep III, ca. 1391-1353 BC.
Now in the Neues Museum, Berlin. Vร„GM 1997/117
