One-man band: Camera, audio, streaming. 100% off-grid. A bit of prep to make this all work and a lot of spinning plates during live transmission as a one-person operator. The goal: ENG versatility/control using electronically motorized parfocal zoom (extreme 17X range), highly controllable audio with clean preamps/limiters, and seamless remote streaming to YouTube broadcast. The URSA Mini Pro still handles this extremely well with optional B4 mount, Hirose control connection, 4.6K downsample, and the native “Extended Video” LUT to take advantage of the UMP’s high dynamic range to handle highlights a bit better in uncontrollable high contrast scenarios (especially with no powered lighting/bounce) in live situations like this. Shark fin ran two batteries in tandem to tame the draw from about 7 thirsty devices with swapability of batteries under continual power feed. The amazing team at San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus were gracious as usual to have me on board for this project and I was thrilled it all worked out with the small footprint they wanted.

Looking forward to this being released in early 2019. This is a short form version of the film (13 minutes) Marco Solorio edited, from the production we shot last May in China (two URSA Mini Pros). Full-length version of the film is being put together now by Steve Eagleton. Everything is being done end to end in DaVinci Resolve Studio across multiple locations. I love my GH5 and as good as the video quality is, even with VLOG, the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K is far superior in video, without question. While the upgraded GH5s would be a better comparison, with both having dual native ISO, the Pocket 4K goes a huge step forward implementing full RAW/ProRes options (along with Blackmagic RAW coming). The bar has certainly been raised. Now don’t get me wrong... the GH5/GH5s were built as a stills camera first and foremost, with added video capabilities secondary, that are astoundingly good. But if mostly shooting video, the Pocket 4K is my better option, while still providing handy RAW still photo functionality to boot. And all my MFT and EF lenses that have IS are fully supported in the Pocket 4K. Interestingly, the Pocket 4K “feels” like a DSLR/mirrorless body in both form and function: changing ISO, electronic aperture, shutter angle, white balance are all very quick and easy without removing my hand from the grip or losing sight of the 5-inch screen. The new Rawlite OLPF (optical low pass filter) arrived for our URSA Mini Pro 4.6K. While I haven’t exhibited bad moire or aliasing, this filter does cut it out completely and the output looks fantastic from what I’ve seen. Lots of good results from some of my fellow UMP veteran shooter friends out there. Figured I’d throw it in to be safe than sorry on some random shoot where unexpected high frequency patterns show up. 👍

Via Marco Solorio of OneRiver Media: That time I drove my Mercedes-Benz as a camera chase car on Thunderhill Raceway to shoot our award-winning documentary feature film, “10/10ths”. My oversized BFGoodrich off-road tires literally had rubber scrub from the lateral G forces on the race track. Definitely a vast departure from its offroad overlanding duties! While I doubt I’d ever do this again, it was well worth the effort with everyone involved with the film later receiving 13 film awards and 16 laurels. To this day, the Blackmagic Production Camera 4K is a solid choice in this shooting application for its compact size, internal RAW, 4K resolution, and of great importance: its very rare global shutter implementation for fast-action shooting. *Footnote: this was on a closed course at Thunderhill Raceway with EMT present and myself with many years of experience on the track (from competition schools, to frequent participant, and ultimately instructor duties) and owner of a track-prepped BMW M3 that I still have to date. In other words... Don’t try this at home! 🏁

New Quasar Science, LLC. R30 bulbs came in for our “hybrid suite”. Dimmable LED, 6000K, 95CRI, and silent on the dimmer sliders. Closest thing so far in LED form to 6500K with high CRI and not buzzy. More details in our upcoming massive in-depth hybrid suite article, soon to be released THIS WEEK!

MINI REVIEW: Purchased a new PreSonus Audio Electronics Faderport 16 and running it through its paces. It’s a mixed review so far. The size is absolutely perfect for how it’s used in our new “hybrid suite” (when operating in “audio mode”), the buttons and faders are easy to see and use, and it can be used across a slew of host applications. Basic functions communicate: pan, mute, solo, multi-select, fader comms, and read/write of automation of all that. But because we’ll pretty much only be using this in DaVinci Resolve Fairlight, there are some limitations. The biggest one is only 8 of the 16 faders can be used (massive bummer 😩 and unfortunately only Blackmagic can fix that), most of the buttons don’t talk to Resolve, the little scribble LCD screens are almost impossible to see (box and marketing make it look like they’re OLED screens but are NOT), and I wish it had a few more visual functions. There are a couple of potential solutions: 1) configure the Elgato Stream Deck for use with some of the non-talking buttons and/or 2) there’s apparently a software translator that can reassign the Faderport 16 to whichever host app you need (similar to the Stream Deck), so I may give that a try. PreSonus’ hands might be tied, but if they could get this to fully work with Resolve somehow, THEY’D SELL A GAZILLION OF THESE THINGS. 🙄

Our documentary production in Wuyishan was a big success and is now in the hands of veteran editor and longtime friend, Steve Eagleton. He’ll be managing and editing the film in DaVinci Resolve Studio. Once picture-lock is in place, the film is back in my hands where I’ll perform the color grade. As Director of Photography of this film, I feel it’s a huge asset to be both Cinematographer and Colorist of the project, carrying the film’s visual emotion from end to end. I’m both honored and grateful.

So this happened. Buddhist monk performing kung fu at an amazing Buddhist temple here in the Wuyishan region of China. This was nothing short of awesome. Two URSA Mini Pros with my A-cam (shown) shooting with the FUJINON Lenses 20-120mm PL mount servo zoom lens. 4.6K open gate RAW HFR 60 to Wise Advanced 512GB CFast cards. Monitored on SmallHD 502 Bright and mounted to Sachtler Video 18 fluid head.
